Clonidine Question | ADHD Information

Share

My 4 year old son has been on Clonidine since March of 2005, he takes his pill at or just after supper time and an hour or so later, he's out for the night.  The Clonidine has been a life saver for my wife and I.

Over the last week or so, my wife and I have noticed our son making a lot of trips to the bathroom and the most he ever does is a dribble.

Anyway, to make a long story short, this pysch told us that frequent urination is a side effect of Clonidine and wants us to stop using the drug.  Before my wife and I started using the Clonidine we researched the drug like crazy and didn't remember seeing this side effect and since our visit this morning, i've been researching like crazy and still cann't find frequent urination as a side effect.

My question is, has anyone heard of frequent urination being a side effect of Clonidine?

Thanks in advance.

Jason

It is hard to find info on clonadine!  My 8 y/o son is currently taking .50 mg of clonadine twice a day and I don't know if it's the right thing for him! I haven't noticed any changes in his urniation, but I will be on the look out now!  My questions are about his inability to stay awake during the day and his manic behavior an hour or so before he takes his pills.  He takes his first pill at 8 am and by 9 am, he is asleep on the way to school.  He takes his second pill around 3:30 pm and by 2 pm, he is crazy!!  Very aggressive, very hyper, very impulsive.  Then about 30 minutes after taking his pill, he will fall asleep if I let him, and stay asleep for a couple of hours.  We have tried the SSRI's, stimulants, everything except the anti-psychotics which our dr is hesitant to give out to an 8 y/o.  Any advice?

Hi-

My 5.5 y/o ADHD son has been on the Catapres patch (clonidine) for 1.5 years. We have not heard of (or noticed) frequent urination as a side-effect. By the way, the patch eliminated the need for frequent dosing, and allows him more consisent effects. We found that although the manufacturer markets it as a 7-day patch, he needs a new one every 4 days. It does tend to fall off more easily in hot/humid weather, but, overall, we are really happy with it.

Until reading your post, I thought we were the only ones using clonidine. We started him on Ritalin but he immediately got complex tics and now stims are out of the question.

take care,

Amy

My son has been on this for awhile also, he does urinate more often but he usually goes a significant amount. If you find some research please let me know. .IMac38947.3910300926

We found the oral doses very, very sedating. Now that he's on the Catapres patch (o.3 mg/day) he only gets extremely tired for a few hours 20 hours after he gets a new patch.

We see that his ADHD sx return as the patch wears off- hyperactive, hyper-verbal, virtually impossible to live with..

He also consistently gets a headache when the new patch kicks in. We have to watch for dehydration with the patch, but you need to watch that with the oral too. The other downside is that it's expensive -170/box of 4 patches, but our insurance picks up the whole cost..

..maybe talk to your doc about switching to the patch?

my son was on the clonidine a long time ago and he started sleepwalking and moaning alot in his sleep ...  but no urination not anything more than he already does =)My daughter  (10)takes Clonidine to help her sleep at night. She has ADHD and takes Ritalin in the morning and in the afternoon. We like that it knocks her out at night. Right now I am out and she stays up at nigh and in the morning she is awake athe crack of dawn. I haven't seen any urination problems but I sure will keep a better eye on it.
