Gymnastics | ADHD Information
My daughter wanted to take gymnastics as well. I found that it really varied as to how long of a wait it was to get on the equipment (from gym to gym). She did not do well with a longer wait, especially when she was younger. We ended up in semi-private lessons which was a little more expensive but she actually did well, learned some skills and all was positive. I am willing to pay for that!!!!!Great for helping with balance problems. Little Gyms is what Daniel did. small classes. He still is a little off balance but not as bad. He was good at this also. Team sports was a struggle for him until he did VT. Now he can play team sports. I think it would be wonderful for your child any activity to burn off some energy. I have my child in dance tap and ballet and this year she is taking Jazz.what is ur daughters diagnosis? my youngest who has mild aspergers did well in gymnastics, until new kids joined----then she didn't want to go anymore! It probably depends on the gym where she would be taking classes too. I know my son does NOT do well when there are multiple classes in a large space. We had to pull him out of soccer b/c it was like 6 fields of soccer going at once in a large space. It was just too overwhelming. If it were a smaller space with a smaller group, it might work out great.I feel it all depends on your daughter, and how you think she'll do. There was a list a while back of sports kids with add/adhd shouldn't play, and three of the sports listed my son had played for years . He loves his sports, and wouldn't give them up for anything. If your daughter starts to do bad, explain to the teacher it's just not working and pull her out!My daughter has taken gymnastics for about 2 years at the Y, and she absolutely loves it. She does have some coordination problems, so she is pretty clumsy. She has had to repeat the same class a number of times because of this, and has been unable to progress to the next level. She does not seem to mind, though. I have just adopted the attitude of letting her take the class as long as she is having fun!

*My girl is clumsy too and was recieving PT at school. Ballet helps I was told why she takes that as well as other. I think clumsy goes with the territory.

My daughter took ballet also for about 11/2 years. However, she finally decided that she didn't want to participate anymore. I think that it was because the classes were very big, and she would get distracted and feel overwhelmed. She likes the gymnastics much better, as the classes are small with 2-4 students in each. I agree, clumsy does seem to go with the territory. It almost seems as if her legs can't keep up with the rest of her body at times!
I know my daughter was just diagnosed but what do others think of gymnastics? good or bad? Let me know.....
