The melatonin is not an rx, you can buy it at the grocery store. If you buy it at Trader Joes they have .5 mg chewables. That way you could start really low and only give her what she needs. Or you can cut the other types up.
My neuro-psyche recommends yoga also.
Taekwondo sounds good - my neice had good results with karate and she is adhd so maybe we can start with karate and then move to taekwondo from there.
The meds we tried were Staterra and Ritalin. The Omega's definitely make a differance but of course we still run into problems (like today). Does anyone have any recommendations to help her 'remember' to keep her hands to herself while in a group setting? She knows not to do it but does it before she can stop herself. Thanks for all your responses - it made me feel a lot better!
My son's behavior responded well to omegas. Others have had good results with other natural supplements or diet changes. Its also proven that many kids have ADHD symptoms due to not enough sleep or not sleeping effectively.I suggest that you check out the alternatives to medication section.
I would also take her for more testing, as many other disorders are first diagnosed ADHD. The fact that she reacted the way she did to the ADHD meds would make me wonder if she did have ADHD or if she has another disorder with it. If you can possibly get her tested by one, I would go for a neuropsychologist or neuropsychiatrist. They are generally the most quaified to diagnose.
Hang in there! You can help her.
I have had luck with: high-EPA Omega 3, classic homeopathic treatment, karate, and melatonin so he gets a full nights sleep. I'm looking into social skills classes and cognitive behavioral therapy at present. I'm trying to get rid of the touching this summer. That's my summer goal. He is writing "I will not touch kids" three to ten times a day so that he internalizes it (he's a visual learner). Thanks for the quick response! I forgot to metion she is on Omega's which have helped considerably. I had her tested at Children's Hospital which included a nuero-psych. We did discover that she has an really high IQ in addition to the ADHD and gets bored very easily. I am just at my wits end - every phone call from a teacher, counselor, etc. We are signing up for Karate in the fall - hopefully that will help too. She sleeps all night but it is a very restless sleep - always moving and kicking around. Do you need an rx for melatonin? I will try the "no touching" writing - thanks "NoTellin" - she is also a visual learner - thanks for the tip. Just once I would to hear "she is doing great - no problem!" I tried Tak wan do for how good it is for our children however the too rigidness of it she refused to go back. I have her in dance she loves and does well. Back to the summer camp they do not have any for learning disabilities where you are? I enrolled my girl in one for learning disabilities and ADHD. I would also find another therapist if you were unhappy with the first one.
