Question about what causes ADHD | ADHD Information

My mother has guardianship of my son right now and she took over what I had started with his docotrs on getting him diagnosed ADHD. The shrink she took him to said that it is very debatable that my son devoloped ADHD through exposure to drugs or alcohol at any point during pregnancy. I dont drink or do drugs, the last time that occured in my life i was 15 and was put in rehab by my mom. i have 11 years of sobrity. My mom has it out for me now and I'm pretty sure she told the shrink that i did used drugs during pregnancy and still do. Yet i have passed numerous tests over 7 years for jobs and did not test positive during prenancy. So far i have not found in any book on ADHD or website that says it can be caused by such a thing, so i wanted to check here to see if anyone has ever heard of this as a cause? Please help me..... My mom has so far convinced the court of this and the judge only allows me to see my son for 4 hours a month and my mother has to be present at the visits. Just a little background.... I gave my mom guardianship for 1 year so i could get on my feet and offer my kids a better life then welfare, the courts did not take my son away from me! She was so understanding of this and acted like this was the best thing for me to do as a mom. she has since lied to the court about me and my now husband and has done her best to keep my son out of my life. I was a stay at home mom since the day he was born 7 years ago, and its killing me to only see him 4 hours a month! my first husband left me with no money or too many choices so that is why i gave my son to my mom for a year. Now i have to jump through a ton of hoops to proove to the court i am a good mother and convince the judge to give my son back. its such a stressful exprience for one person to go through... i dont recomend it to anyone..IMac38944.841087963I was a foster mom and the system absolutely reeks. I would never sign my rights away to anybody or get CPS involved, but that's water under the bridge. To get your child back, I'd jump through all the hoops and not seem defensive, but play the game. The more defensive you get, the more you may tick them off. Meanwhile, I'd also get a lawyer, even if you have to apply to legal aide. I hope you get your son back. Maybe you can have him see a NeuroPsych or a Child Psychiatrist to refute whoever this professional is who told your mom you must have taken drugs, and I wish you luck. I hate when this happens to parents.

ADHD and ADD  is hereditary.  Good luck getting your son back.

More people have disorders now than ever. You can be a carrier also. Some people carry disorders and don't have it themselves. A dna test would prove that theory. I believe a toxic society is raising the amount of people with disorders. Some kids have disorders that the parents don't have either. I met a lady who has 2 fragile x kids AND mom learned she is the dna carrier thru the dna test.

yes it is hereditary,my son has ADHD,I have ADD.but it also be through a head trauma in childhood,my ADD is probably hereditary but apparently was made worse by an illness i had as a baby where i was in a coma.

substance abuse is apparently somewhat linked to ADHD/ADD.never thought of being tested?

Jenn, Keep fighting for your son. It will be worth the battle. I do not believe for a minute that ADHD is relative to any of that. We have found it to be heriditary, but that's about it. I wish you Good Luck and God Speed in getting your son back!I have heard that fetal alchol syndrom can have attention problems.Jenn1379,

It sounds to me like your mum has gotton used to having your son around & is scared to think you want him back, does she have a legal right to keep him, what did you sign for her to have him & if it was only for a year, then surely, she should give him back?

Keep fighting though, even if you have to go through tests to prove to them you are a fit mother, that day will come, you will be with him again.

You love your son & you are his mother once the courts see that you are clean & nothing is standing in your way as they will see, then they have no choice but to let you have him back.Adhd and brain injuries do happen, but most often its heredity.

I have 2 daughters that have shown no signs or symptoms of ADHD.  BUT, I was told by the school a year ago that my oldest daughter might have an LD.  She scored really high on the english, reading, writing, but scored in the bottom 3rd percentile in math.  The school called me in and I had to meet with a large group of people to discuss this.  They told me some term about the large difference in the two parts of the test (don't remember what they said?).  For some reason I got mad about the whole thing, told them they couldn't do further testing on her.  I sent her to a tutor for the year and she rasied the state test score to the 30th percentile.  She went to JR. High and got a final grade in math of a B this year!!

I was talking this year with my therapist about this whole situation and she said I should have let them do additional testing???  How do you know when to make the right decision about your kids education when the "experts" talk to you about this stuff???

yeah,i was doomed from the start
