I am very interested to see how many moms out there had an unknown thyroid condition during pregnancy> I found out that I had severe hyperthyroidism when my son was almost 3, and had it during my pregnancy.
I learned that when I was really sick and was hospitalized, this was more than likely a thyroid storm episode which most times causes miscarriage. I have read that having this condition while pregnant, your child may have a thryoid condition and more than likely will have speech delays and other delays as well. I am wondering if this may have contributed towards his ADHD and if other women had this problem as well.
Curious in MD.
I had Graves disease in remission (Graves disease is an overactive thyroid) during my pregnancy. About a month after birth my Graves disease flared up, and I was put on anti-thyroid meds. It went into remission and I haven't had a recurrence since. I also breastfed while on the anti thyroid meds, as I was told it didn't get into the breastmilk.
My son has recently been diagnosed ADD - he has had learning difficulties all along.
My thyroid issue was diagnosed when Daniel was 10 months. Both sides of my family have thyroid issues. RN I read this un treated can effect the baby. In my family it is skipping no one. My new dr. says its only 10% heriditary. I question that since it hasn't skipped in my family.
Wonder if anyone is looking into this. Very interesting, I read that undiagnosed, hyper and hypo would have the same problems. I def. looking back had thyroid storm during my pregnancy, severe vomiting and nausea, i ended up dehydrated and hospitalized, my iron was soooo low they were ready to transfuse me. I also felt like i could lay down and die from severe exhuastion. I had all they symptoms of thyroid storm. My thyroid was never checked during my pregnancy. My throid was so overactive I could have developed congestive heart failure and they were sure i had graves, but i didnt develop a goiter nor did my eyes bulge. I agree that it probably is hereditary, my grandmother and my aunt both had thyroid conditons, my grandmother graves. this would be interesting to pose to those groups doing research about adhd to find out if the mothers had thyroid conditions during/or diagnosed soon after delivery.... please keep posting as i will collect these and send them to a few study groups doing the genetic research. any bit helps i am sure.
The women in my family have it mostly. Some of the men to do.
