Am I Nuts! | ADHD Information
I have just recently been diagnosed with ADHD. So needless to say, I am still trying to get a handle on this.
Who else can relate to the following:
You go to the library, check out more than a few books and can't seem to get through any of them? For example, right now I have five books about ADD/ADHD on my night stand and have three of them started but probably will not finish them because I get bored with them.
You have a million career goals, are highly intelligent yet can't seem to stick with something long enough to see it through completion?
You are frustrated as heck because you want to accomplish so much yet can't seem to get your wheels moving in the right direction, and stay on course.
You work your tail off on something you start, make two steps forward and take 30 back?
Go off on co-workers when you "perceive" them as slackers and someone who just wants to get by because you work your tail off only to be called to the carpet by the boss because he/she is oblivious?
If you can relate I'd love to hear from you. Also, I have heard there are six different types of ADD/ADHD. Anyone know of a good test to take to determine what type someone is?
Hiya! Welcome to the board.
No one should ever, ever give me a library card, EVER.
One day I said to myself, "You have been trying to turn things in on time (or at all) for 30 years without success. Why don't you just admit that it just ain't gonna happen." Then I cut up every card that involved a late fee. Instead of feeling defeated, I actually felt free. Those cards were nothing but a source of aggravation and guilt for me. It turns out to be far cheaper to simply buy books and DVDs.
I can relate to all of your points. Are you taking meds? For me, they have made a huge difference. Until I started medication, I never realized that other people's brains had brakes, steering wheels, turn signals, airbags... I never knew what I struggled with until I was suddenly free of it the first time I took meds. It is great to know that I don't have to feel like a rollerblader going downhill against traffic at rush hour.
Best wishes, let us know how it goes!
I also have about three or 4 books on ADD on my book shelf and have partially finished two of them. They are on the shelf along with about two dozen books I have purchased over the past couple of years, that I have not read yet.
And yet, I just picked up a few more books from the library.
As far as career choices. I've probably been through them all except perhaps brain surgeon. I am 55 years old and I still don't know what I want to be when I grow up, just what I don't want to be.
I could never decide while I was in college either and so there for never finished even though I was close to three degrees when I finally dropped out.
I was drawn to the arts because I love the creative world but as well all know very few people make a living doing art. So that is why I work in a law office as a receptionist/legal assistant.
I always envied those folks who knew exactly what they wanted and went for it without hardly any sidetracking or diversion. As much as tried, I could never get my heart behind any particular "career".
But I am working at being a writer and I think that my trying different things throughout my life, gave me a great many experiences I would not have had if I had been a more "linear" person. Not all paths are straight.
ADD people do tend to be the real "workers" in the workplace and yet do not get the credit because they are often perceived as being spacey or a little "off"
At least that has been my experience.
i spent a fortune on late fees at the library.i do not really READ books,i always finish them but skips words, sentences or even all paragraphs
i am great at starting things(once i get round to it)but never finish.
i am not too sure about your question about different kind of ADD/ADHD.I am impulsive inattentive ADD because in my tests this 2 aspects were the worst,my results for them were off the charts
Oh, the kinds of ADHD. I think that is Dr. Amen's theory. (somebody help me out, I read that stuff years ago) At any rate, that theory is pretty controversial but I agree it is a fascinating idea. I am inattentive, hyperactive with a medium size portion of impulsive. Thanks all for the insightful replies. I am relieved to be able to relate to almost everything, everyone has written.
As far as meds go, I am on Concerta, a very low dose, 18 mg daily. For the first few months it seemed to help a little. Now, however, I don't feel like this medication is working as well as it used to. I am scheduled to go back to my doc at the end of the month so we'll see what he says.
I would love to be able to afford to go to the Amen clinic and see what my brain looks like on film. I've got two books I just took out of the library yesterday. I actually read a whole book today, but lets see if I even get to the other one. I"ve also been known to read two books at a time and not finish either of them. When something interests me I go at it voraciously but don't always stick with it. I am also ADD inattentive, not hyperactive, but can be impulsive. I never finished college and regret it. I have also had many different jobs and usually multiple at one time. I am a very hard worker and get frustrated when other co-workers don't pull their weight and get credit where it isn't due. The impulsitivity is the hardest part for me to deal with and what gets me into trouble sometimes. I do plan on finishing college one day and want to do counseling so I can help others that have struggled like me.
Oh and there are tests you can take online about the different types of ADD. One of the sites I looked at is http://www.add101.com/types.htm. Hope that helps. There are so many different tests online for everything imagineable. What would we do without the internet? So glad I found this forum and all the kind people here. Dee
lostmyshoe38906.524375I almost laughed out loud, because I could have written the original
post! I have about 12 books out from the library right now, and they
are massively late. My local library system has a per item maximum
fee, which is very bad for me; once I've reached the , there's no
incentive to rush to return them, as the fine won't get any higher.
My problem is, when I browse through the stacks, there are so many
things that interest me. I want to read everything, so I check out far
too many books. From now on, I think I will place a hold on the books I
want, so they will be waiting for me at the desk. If I can just go
straight to the desk and straight out again, I won't see the other
books...
