My son picks his nose, and for the most part I ignore it.  Once the other kids pick on him for it he will stop.  I used to try to correct him, but I have bigger fish to fry.  Is Aaron on any meds?  I found that meds and positive reinforcement help with my son's attitude.  He has to earn chips and then pay chips to watch TV, get computer time, get an allowance, and so on.  Search Ogram's marble system.

I am new here.  I have 3 boys of which my oldest, Aaron 8 years old has ADHD and ODD and it seems no matter what myself or DH does sometimes, he just will not listen.  When we tell him that he is grounded because he did something wrong.  He just back talks us and says no he is not and whines and crys about it.  Some days I just do not know where to turn with him.  One of the other big issues that I have with him is that he is constantly picking his nose.  When I catch him, I tell him to stop and go wash his hands.  I just get more crying and then he goes right back to it.  He is the oldest of 3 and he is showing his brothers very bad habits.  His 5 1/2 year old brother has Autism and his 2 1/2 year old brother has speech apraxia.  They have a tough enough time without Aaron teaching them bad habits.

I have been thinking that he may be ASD for a while.  In fact I mentioned it to his doctor and he said he did not think so.  But I live with ASD  everyday with my middle son so I know a little bit.  I do not quite think that Aaron is PDD-NOS like my middle son is.  I think that it might be Asbergers.  He goes back to see his doctor on the 28th and if he will not work with me at that time, I will find someone who will.  I think I just needed someone to point out to me what has been in the back of my mind all along.  Thanks.

Sure. Hey, I have a good site, just like this one, that is for PDD/Autism (including Aspergers, of course). You may want to check it out. You may want to see a NeuroPsych. It took us 11 years to get the PDD-NOS diagnosis. Really, lots of professionals are very clueless and don't know how to look for it. It's really sad and hurts a lot of kids who get the ADHD dx. and don't have ADHD.

man i wish dillon would pick his nose....  i know that sounds gross..  he won't let anyone clean his nose out... at times his nose is so packed he can't breath...

by the way....WELCOME TO THE BOARD.... it sounds like you have your hands full.... stick around this really is a great place to be...

I have a son on the Spectrum and it's very herditary. Are you certain that your son doesn't have a high functioning form of Autism, such as Aspergers? The nosepicking could be part of it. Also, these kids often seem ODD. Has he ever seen a Neuropsych? My experience as a mom of a kid with ASD is that they don't usually copy behaviors. In fact, I think that's a symptom of autism--they don't copy what others do. It's kind of a red flag. I think maybe--and, of course I"m not sure--maybe if your oldest goes into a meltdown, the kids have sensory overload and lose it, which is very common with ASD. My son was first diagnosed with ADHD/ODD, however it has since become obvious that he's on the high functioning end of the spectrum. He is diagnosed PDD-NOS, but seems higher functioning than many Aspies. I wish you luck in your journey. MomWI38907.8123958333Yes he is on Strattera and some days it seems like it all helps, but other days it seems like a battle zone around here.Welcome..... sorry you are having such a struggle.  Is your oldest medicated or being treated in anyway for his ADHD?I am already on the PDD/Autism board too, have been for about a year.  I never had discussed Aaron on there, just mainly my middle son.  Maybe I will post a new thread about Aaron and see what everyone there has to say too.   It is always good to have all the input that you can get.  I discussed with my DH tonight that I thought that Aaron might possibly be aspergers and his comment to me was well get him tested if you want but I don't think so.  For Aaronsmom....I'm new to this but, I also have an eight year old son that has been diagnosed with ADHD and ODD.  He seems to have the same exact issues your son has.  The only difference is that when he picks his nose, he tries to hide it from us.  I noticed that you said that when you try to ground him, it does not work.  My son's councler just told us the other day that in a child his age that will not work with him having ADHD.  I just thought I would pass that along to you also.  I have a very hard time dicsipling my son.  I'm thinking of getting a second oppinion since nothing seems to help him.  The meds only seem to help his hyperactivity.  Which I am greatful.  I just wish I could fix the other problems he is having.  I am so glad to have finally found other parents out there who understand what I am going throughI am a newbie to all this but i have a few questions that I am concerned with. I have an eight year old that is very much at the high spectrum for adhd and I know he does not have bipolar I keep hearing about asp and other diagnoses.  I was wondering if somone could tell me more about these other diseases.  We are at the final straw with my son.  After several hospitalizations and several medication changes the doctors do not know what to do now.  They are leaning toward hospitalization long term for him over 6 months to a year.  Please help
