My son recently switched from Adderal to Concerta at the advice of our doctor. He's taking it in the morning but it's taking him much longer to calm down at school than with Adderal. Is this because of the time-sensitive release of Concerta? How long does it usually take for the effects to be felt? Has anyone else experienced this? Thanks a bunch.
No, I have heard about it tho, and those parents have dealt with it by giving them their meds on waking - some parents even arrive in their room to wake them with water and tablets.
Hi I give my ten year old his concerta, usually around 7, that way it's kicked in by the bus stop , which is 8:30. Sometimes it only takes 40 min. for it to work, but usually it's an hour. He does his homework around 6;00, while his meds. are still in if not, forget you won't even get him to put his name on the paper. The first thing I have my son do when he wakes up every morning is to take his dose of concerta. Thus far it seems to kick in just in time for school. Our problem is getting through homework in the evenings. They have tried him on a few medications to help him getting through homework and I don't like how he responds to any of them. He either can't fall asleep when it is bed time or he is totally knocked out. Neither effects, in my opinion, are healthy. Any thoughts and ideas how to get through the homework hassle to alleviate the stress homework time causes? Thank you.
My DSO gives the Concerta 30 minutes before he's supposed to get up in the morning. If he doesn't, the entire morning ritual (waking, eating, getting ready, etc.) is hellish and qutie unbearable.
It works so that's what happens Monday-Friday.
My 10 yr. son has been on Concerta for 3 wk. now. He is doing sooo much better. Are home is healing. I give him his med. about 10 min. aftre he wakes up. He eats something light then takes it with a drink. About 30 min. later he's off to school. No prob. for him at school in the morning.Ok. I thought everything was ok at school... I talked to his teacher yesterday and she said that he WAS having morning problems. That was big news to me. She could have told me before. But anyways, I told her that it took about 1 hour for the med. to kick in. She said that she did note a better acting child the rest of the day. I hope that she will now not be so....... with my child first thing in the morning.
My son spend 2 - 3 hours on homework when it should only take 20 minutes. It is a battle every night.I too have noticed that concerta does have a 30- 60 min. window to work. I give my 5yr old it as soon as he gets up at 6;30, then a light breakfast and off to school at 7;45. The teacher says his behavior is much improved but that he is still haveing problums concintrateing .I have only had him on concerta for 2 weeks, but it seems like it wears off shortly after school lets out, and homework is a real challenge has any one else expirenced this ? They say it takes 3-4 weeks to get totally in your system but i wonder.!
