Wondering About Aspergers? | ADHD Information
Good post and true. Until ten years ago, Aspergers was dxd. as ADHD. They require different intervetnions and social cluelessness is not addressed with ADHD--these kids may have social problems, but aren't socially clueless. I'm glad there is heightened awareness. My son was diagnosed ADHD at age two and I fully believe it's because back then nobody knew much about higher functioning autism, which is what his problem main is. I'm grateful for the progress in diagnostics, although good testing still mostly comes only from NeuroPsychs. Have no idea why other professionals dont do the same type of performance testing. The "Little Professor" speak is common (my son does it at times), but not all ASD do it all the time. MomWI38908.2232175926Wow. Your site has an EXCELLENT description of ASD kids! Very good site--almost the best description of ASD I've ever seen. The description of more classical autism and PDD-NOS is good and the Aspergers description caught it to a "t." I suggest anyone who thinks his/her child may have Aspergers check out the Aspergers list on this site (don't look at the list of classical autism--it's different). MomWI38908.22625MomWI:
I do agree with what you are saying to a point but in our case my daughter is ADHD and Aspergers, more ADHD since her symptoms for Aspergers are not catastrophic. She is not socially clueless but suffers socially. She wants and trys very hard to make and understand her friends and becomes rather obsessed with her two or three friends. She talks so much about them....LOL.... I asked her one day if she was going to tell me the color of their underware next. She got upset and stormed to her room slamming the door; I think she misunderstood me and did not find my comment funny at all.
Ok, so I may not have handled that sitution perfectly but hey I am a mother who is not perfect and I had enough of hearing about the friend who treats my daughter like dirt.
There is so many things I could talk about but I spear everyone the boring stories in my household....LOL...
TammyI believe you. You have a good handle on both disorders and a great site. I'm really impressed :) Some Aspies are not as affected as others. It's great your daughter can make friends, even if she obsesses about them...lol :) Sounds like she has a good prognosis for a great life. I see so many parents here asking, "Is my child ADHD or Aspergers?" The answer is that a professional should be able to evaluate your child over a period of time and make a call as to whether or not he or she actually has Aspergers. When a child has been diagnosed with ADD/HD, it's hard for the professionals to see anything but ADHD. ADD/HD seems to parallel with Aspergers quite a bit from my studies on the two subjects. I have an ADHD daughter who has also been diagnosed with "Mild" Aspergers. I also have different professionals who disagree with one another as to her main diagnosis and some think she is just ADHD. Some of her behaviors that landed her the mild Aspergers diagnosis could be a direct result of ADHD, who knows, the professionals seem confused at times. The important thing is not the label the child has but the treatment they get. A lot of children with ADHD have sensory issues just like children with Autism and Aspergers, which OT treatment could do wonders. Treatment is the key!!!!
A Developmental Pediatrician has been wonderful in our case but I did keep a detailed journal for months prior to seeing this doctor.
My daughter who has Aspergers/ADD/HD (12-years) has issues like a lot of children I am seeing here. She has social issues, only a couple of friends, misunderstands people and expressions, seems to talk non-stop about things that are interesting to her, more serious than most, does not take a joke well, does not take sarcasm well, mild literal interpretation. She cannot spell, read, or do math well at all. She has a learning disability in the area of math.
I have seen some Asperger kids who do well in math who act like little professors; well that is not the case with my Brittany.
I have an Asperger checked list on my support group that the doctor used when diagnosing my daughter. I copied the form completely to my site for others to print so they could take it with them to a professional if they suspect Aspergers.
Anyone here is more than welcome to come on over and take the form.
Also, I have a lot of information on sensory and suggestions to the left hand side of my group that came directly from my son's OT therapist.
Just remember one thing, no two children are the same when it comes to the Autism and ADHD spectrum and some or maybe a lot of children could very well have both.
