rant about adderall doseing | ADHD Information

i would go to another doctor who will give you what you need. I too needed more dosage starting at 20mg XR but then switched to 20 mg gereric two times daily..MUCH better for me so im on 40 mg, which is not only cheaper but more effective. when it starts to wear off i just take another one...best of Luck...I am a little upset because My Dr. today refused to raise my script.  I was have been on lots of meds, but nothing seemed to help.  Finally about 6 months ago I was refered to a psyc.  He tried bi-polar meds and what not, but nothing and finally he suggested the adderall.  long story short he started me out on 10mg IR twice a day.  I worked great for about 4 days and then it stopped.  When I called about uping my dose he said to wait a month and he would see me at my next appointment. so after a month he upped me to 20mg.  So now after another month with feeling it is not quite right I went in and he said well that is a high as he is comfortable prescribing.  I said well I thought I had habituated to it and it was not effective for me anymore. he said that people do not hypituate to adhd meds and I should be able to "get by" on the 20 mg.  He said it is not like you are a child who has a teacher or parent to regulate your productivity???? Like I can not regulate myself?  I am 34 for godsake...I know when it is working and when it is not.

So anyway enough of my rant.  What has others heard about highest doses? Keep in mind I weigh 230 pounds.  (which was another thing that pissed me off.  he said well even if it is no longer helping you as you think it must be doing somthing because you look like you have lost weight.AS IF THAT WAS THE GOAL!)

I'd say get another opinion.  There may be other factors you aren't willing to speak about but if not this doc may just be one of the ones scared off by the anti-med groups and afraid of backlash.  You didn't mention him checking your heart or weight physically (just by look) and that's important.

By not working - is it just you don't "feel" the effect (happy, upbeat) or do you feel the ADHD symptoms slipping back?  I'd recommend therapy with your med at any dose if you can afford it as it helps retrain your mind so you break all the habits.

Best of luck

Get a new doctor. I'm 135 lbs & I'm prescribed 20mgs 4x/day (although one's body weight doesn't have anything to do with dosage). Sometimes I may even take 5 a day, depending on what I have going on. Of course, that means I end up taking 3 a day at other times (usually weekends), but that hasn't been a problem for me. 20mgs last 3-4 hours for me & I take the first one at 5:30am when I wake up.

What a jerk!  A good doctor gives you a say in your treatment and a reason for medication decisions.  This guy sounds like he doesn't have a reason to give.  Not to mention being a JERK!.  Get yourself a new pdoc!

Good luck, let us know how it goes!
