adhd schools | ADHD Information

Great lakes is a school for those with add and adhd ane any other learning difference. k thru 12 also which would allow to stay until they graduate. I agree with the previous posters who suggested a Montessori School.

We recently enrolled our 13YO son in a Montessori School and he did quite
well in the environment for the eight weeks he attended. It was the first
time we didn't hear any complaints from teachers about his behavior There
are also several other ADHD boys in his class. So unlike most private
schools, they are not afraid to take ADHD kids.

I think what makes it work for our son is that the classes are very small,
there is lots of personal attention, the environment is structured but kids
work at their own pace. And they do not believe in homework just for the
sake of giving homework. Homework previously had been torturous.
Maybe check this website for NY area schools--they seem to run the gamit from Autism to Montessori, etc

good luck!
hi i am new to this message board. I have a six year
old son whom I am home-schooling because i don't
want him to attend the behavioral school that my
school district wants to keep him enrolled in. There,
he was modeling behaviors from other, very difficullt
kids, was not making any friends and was
miserable. i am looking for a good school for him. I
would be willing to re-locate anywhere! He has adhd,
is totally delightful, smart, and, of course, hyper and
difficult to teach in a traditional setting. Has anyone
heard of good schools for kids with adhd? thanks for
any help i can get!

Here on Long Island there is a Montessorri school with its own program for kids with ADHD. http://www.westhillsmontessori.org/

I have it as one as my favorites just in case my son needs to go one day

I would suggest you look for teachers who are educated about adhd. Working closely with schools who have students with adhd has taught me that teachers may not always be given all the resources they need. And I strongly suggest educating those involved with your son.  Drug companies will supply you with plenty of materials.  If your child sees a psychiatrist for medication, then ask his doctor for information to share with your sons school. Drug reps visit doctors regularly and leave behind very valuble videos about adhd.  Your sons adhd may not go away after childhood. It carries over into adulthood at times.  It would be impossible for him to find a college, career, wife, etc that would be good for someone with adhd. Great lakes Academy Plano, Tx. Grades k thru 12. Was suggested by Daniel's eye dr. I hear great stuff about this school. Uniforms worn also. They also have after school care additional cost. They say adhd kids can get fininacial help for payeing for tituition hear. Educatiuonal Govt. grants!

I know that some montessori schools take ADHD kids.

Just curious, does that mean that your son qualified for special education under the ED category, and you signed an IEP? I'm wondering how else they could force him into a behavioral school, unless an IEP team was in charge.

I know the Summit school in Queens is a special needs school - I know there are ADHD and high functioning autistic kids there - I don't know what else.Where would one get also the same info on good schools for adhd in the NY city area?   We live in Brooklyn but are very happy to send her to Queens or Manhattan if we had a list or suggestion. All Ld schools would be private schooling. Do a internet search under private schools under the closet big city to you. The only one where we live uses Alpha omega computer curriculum. Here all most all kids are in public can't afford private.
