ADHD and the Internet 2 | ADHD Information

Larry,

What would you regard as the specific challenges?

Too many distractions? Hard to focus on doing "proper work" with the Internet in the background? Having multiple windows open, and flipping between all 10 of them?

Having started on ritalin this week, I am trying to set myself some "rules", such as only visiting certain forums on alternate days, or limiting the amount of time I spend on certain web sites. I also intend to limit myself to checking e-mail three times each day.

I'm considering setting up my second computer in a different room, and deliberately not networking it into anything. That way, I would be able to get a certain amount of work done each day, free of any other distractions.

So I am emboldened by the frankness of the comments on other subjects and would like to say more about his problem that I perceive.  I have ADHD.  I am 42 and have been married more than 20 years.

I think ADHD and the internet are a very difficult mix.  There is much opportunity for hyperfocusing and on the wrong thing.  I read the hypersexuality thread with interest and also the new subject by Lauren-Nicole.  Both underscored for me a common problem among some of us.  I came to this forum because of continued unhappiness with my conduct which among other things includes preoccupation with sexual thoughts, etc.  I think it has been helpful to come here and see that others have similar issues.  But . . . I suspect I am also not alone among these with similar issues who also has found the internet to be fertile ground for meeting others and engaging in communications that my wife would not be pleased with.  Even now as I try to seek help and advice, I know I must battle the impulsivity and tendency to hyperfocus that so besets my every word and deed.

Ritalin has definitely tended to help me.  My question is whether anyone has come up with solutions to the internet challenges for persons with ADHD.
