My 9 year old started taking Ritalin 3 wks ago and it was great.  He took 5mg am, 5 mg pm.  After a week we increased to 10mg am, 10mg pm.  He is almost as difficult as before he took the medication.  Is this normal??

If it  was great at 5mg, why was he upped to 10?

I might say talk to your doc and back him down to 5 and see if the difficulties go away.

When first starting, a lot of doctors want you to play around with the dose to find that "perfect amount" since it varies so extremely depending on the person. Sure, it may work well at 5mg, but may work even better at 10 but you will never know if you don't try.

In this case, it seems like 5mg WAS the perfect amount since upping the dose caused negitive effects. I would definately drop back down and consider it a major plus that you found the perfect dose on the first try!

I agree... if it was great at 5 why up the dosage?  I'd get doc input.

Well, I took him back to the doctor today.  They dropped him back down to 5 mg for the next two weeks.  We have to go back in at that point.  Of course, right after I have said that he is doing fine on 5 mg, I switch him (for his afternoon dose) and we have a horrible afternoon.

I'm hoping for a better day tomorrow.
