So frustrated | ADHD Information

Well we applied for SSI for Trevor since he does a lot better when I am home, so I thought this could help and I could stay home more, maybe working part time. When he goes to day care he is horrible.

They sent me to the state specialist and she wrote in her report he has no problem other than paying attention! WHAT?!?!?!?! He was diagnosed a few years back by a DR who specializes in ADHD and sleep disorders, he went thru the sleep studies etc. I cant believe this! I am so mad right now.

I guess I've missed out on another of your postings.  Does your son not take medication?  If he is just having focusing issues why would a daycare send you to a state specialist?

Sorry you are having to go through all of this.

Yes he is on meds, which control the hyperness but not his other issues. When he goes to daycare he is so bad. He is out of control. The only thing I have found that works is me staying home.My son was also diagnosed with ADHD and when we applied for SSI for him we were told that his condition was bad but not severe, so he was denied.  The said that he was better under meds and doctors care so he was basically getting better with treatment, but we are now on our third kind of medicine, so how is that getting better with treatment?  Hope you find it comforting that you are not alone.

It is hard to get SSI. ADHD isnt considered a severe enough disability. My friend works in our County Disability and you wont get it, adult or child, with only an ADHD dx. If he indeed gets an Asperger's diagnosis, you have a better chance. If you feel he is so non-functional that he needs SSI, it is indeed in his interest for you to re-test him, get the diagnosis, and get him help. The extra money can pay for services you couldn't otherwise afford. Again, I recommend posting on the ASD board. It really isn't a scary place. The parents are nice, helpful, and honest. I'm going to post a few links where you can check out PDD/Aspergers. I posted an assessment test for PDD that you can do online. PDD includes Aspergers. The people on the ASD board feel it is pretty accurate, and it did point to what their children were ultimately diagnosed with.

Oops. I see you are already on the ASD board. You got some great advice there :)

Have you tried play therapy social groups for him?  This is something we considered but have not had to do because the medicine and diet is helping in our case.  We do play therapy on a 1:1 basis instead.

I have a friend that is a counselor and she highly recommends peer counseling/play therapy for children that appear to be out of control.

Another option is to check with your local children's hospital.  Ours has a program that the children attend and they receive intense social behavioral lessons along with daily academics.  My understanding is that they go there for a designated period of time on a daily basis and then are mainstreamed back into your daycare or school. I know when we didn't know what was wrong with our child... he was very agressive with his peers this was a consideration.  It sounded like a great program.  Just some thoughts for you to consider if you haven't already.

I to have applied for ssi for my son and they denied me because they take their doctors opinoin over the actual doctor because the parents have to feel it out but my son's condition has gotten worse he has two holes in his ears from busted ear drums and he and my other to children have something genetically wrong with them that they get it from me yes I have it too.

oh sorry your best bet is to have your childs doctor fill it out and if you have a counselor at your childs school to have them fill out and you sign it.....That's how my mother in law got to get her SSI.
