My daughter also has Generalized Anxiety Disorder along with ADHD. She has some of the same symptoms as your son, only (I think) to a lesser degree. She has the anxiety, worries, and hyperactivity (this is about her most pronounced symptom), and constant talking. She is not aggressive, and does not appear to be depressed. She has had some OCD symptoms in the past, but these seem to have subsided. I also have found that trying to keep things structured works the best with her, as she feels more secure. I think that this has been my most difficult area, as I have ADD myself, and I can really get distracted from the routine at times. I also use timers with her for different things. I also try to keep her busy and active. She takes gymanastics and swimming classes, as well as craft classes at the art center. Physical activity seems to decrease the anxiety somewhat, and it seems to help if she has something to do with her hands. Crafts seems to help with this. She has also been in Girl Scouts in the past, but wants to try 4H this year. It seems that if she stays busy, the less time that she has to think about things, so the anxiety symptoms decrease. If she just sits around, she gets bored, and then she has some real problems.
I guess that the only other thing that I had to mention is that I feel that it's important to be very consistent with discipline. If something is wrong once, then it is important to follow through with discipline each time the behavior occurs. It is also important to try to stay calm, although this is sometimes difficult to do. It is also important to take care of your own needs, as these can often get neglected with all of the other chaos that we have going on!
Yes he was evluated at the hospital by a neuropsych who did several testing on him and came to the conclusion that no further tests were needed that they did not feel that his disease was organic is how they put it to me. I did reguest on the last visit yesterday that further tests be ordered regardless of what they thought, they are working on that now. Hopefully they will do further testing this week at childrens hospital. Heather, anxiety is an organic disorder. So is ADHD. What did the neuropsych mean by his comment?Has he seen a NeuroPsyh? They diagnose ADHD and beyond. Do mood disorders run in the family? Substance abuse? Any autism, high or low functioning?MomWI38912.3500694444I can't relate to this personally but I can say that I had a friend that I worked with that something similar was the case for her son at around the same age as yours. She and her husband did send there son to a facility to help for about a year. She said it wasn't easy but in her heart she knows it was the best thing for her son and their family. Her son is now in 6h grade and is doing quite well. Until 4th grade he was in behavioral resource classes. As of 5th grade he was mainstreamed into regular education with special education support. He now is on a monitor basis. He is doing quite well. I hope this helps you see one possiblity.
God Bless You and Your Son... and lots of
I feel all alone. I have an eight year old who has adhd and now has been diagnosed with an anxiety disorder in which they are thinking is his major issue and the adhd is the secondary condition. He has all the symptons at the worst level. We have tried him on every medication out there. He is anxious, worries, very hyper, talks alot, very depressed, suicidal at times, very aggressive, no friends, you all get the picture. He sees psych twice a month theopist once a week and TA once a week and Impact worker once a week. He has been hospitalized several times inpatient programs and out patient programs at the hospital. I run a tight ship at home due to having two boys with this disease. We have schedules all day including art music tv time and even menus on what they are going to eat. For disicipline we have tried everything from reward chart to timers you name it. The docters are all out of suggestions they are suggesting a long term facility 6 months to a year. I am not sure. Please anyone that has any suggestions I really need the help.
