can anyone recomend strattera | ADHD Information
I take strattera and I find it very effective. I do suffer from nausea, especially if I don't eat something before taking it. I heard the same thing about it's effectiveness for my son though- it simply does not work for children the way it does for adults.

Before taking it myself I'd heard mostly negative things about it. The usual side effects of any stimulant (which straterra is supposedly not) or that it was just plain not very effective. I am not a child so the results may differ by age, but it has been very effective for me thus far for adhd symptoms and symptoms I would attribute more to depression. For the adult I think it becomes fuzzy on how you treat adhd as some schools of thought seems to recommend anti-depressants like Prozac while others recommend stimulants. Then there is the fact that strattera was meant to be an anti-depressant but supposedly did not pass the grade so was then approved and marketed as an adhd medication. Supposedly it is not a stimulant, but the side effects are the same as any stimulant I've ever taken (chills, periods of nervousness, a little stomach ache).
Anyway, for me it seems to be pretty effective and it is the first medication I've tried. The only child I know who took it did not have success with it according to his Mom. Of course I think he only tried it for a couple of weeks. Since switching to a stimulant he has had a very noticeable change which I've personally observed. Don't know why your doctor would be recommending two drugs for the same symptoms concurrently. Concerta and Strattera are both reuptake inhibitors but for different chemicals so maybe that's the thinking. Don't know.
i think he was giving him both meds because he said that strattera does fully kick in for 3-4 wks.i was worried about giving it to him but i thought we'll try it and see if its negative we will stop it.
Both of my sons were on Strattera for two years. It worked pretty well for my 18 year old but he was taking it inconsistently. He had no side effects. I don't think it was as effective for him as Ritalin was. Now, he's taking nothing ----- his choice.
My 15 year old does horribly on stimulants. We've tried them all with about the same side effects that I hear everyone else has on Strattera - anger, bossiness, anxiety, lack of appetite. On Strattera he was happy, consistently focused, less hyper. After 2 years it started to lose its effectiveness. We gave stimulants one more try and now we've moved on to Provigil with the same fantastic results as we had on Strattera.
i see alot of people talking bad about strattera, does anyone have any good effects from it,my sons dr suggested starting him on it with his regular med concerta 54 but i'm very worried after reading everyone here saying how bad strattera is has anyone had luck with it. my son just turned 7 and weighs 40 lbs so the dr was starting him on 10 of strattera for a week and then 18 for a week, should i be worried? My 6 year old has been on Straterra 40 mg for about 6 weeks. He was
previously on Focalin XR 10mg and that seemed to be working pretty
good. But, to me, it just wasn't consistent from day to day. So, we went
ahead and tried the Straterra, which is what our Psych suggested in the
first place. At this point, he seems to be less hyper than w/out meds.
But, his temper, bossiness, anger problems are worse than with Focalin.
And, since it's been 6 weeks, we're not sure how much longer to keep
trying this one. Our pediatrician says he maxed on the dose since he's
only about 56 lbs. So, we dont really have the option of playing with the
dosage.
As far as other side effects, he doesn't really have any. He doesn't
complain of a stomach ache with the meds anymore. He sleeps fine most
of the time. There are nights where he just can't sleep, but it could be
the heat we're having here too. (Yesterday it was 108).Strattera works great for me, along with Wellbutrin XL and buspirone for anxiety. I think anxiety problems are aggravated by stimulants. That was my story, anyway.
Now I have changed jobs and moved, and have no insurance for the next month. I'm out of Strattera and missing it so badly I am afraid of losing this new job. I am just not calm enough to function and track my thoughts without it. I'm a school teacher.
Different combinations of meds work for different people. You can't give up.
my son is taking strattera for over a year and its working grest for him. The first 3 months were the hardest ones so we starting giving him the meds over the summer. When school started last year he was ready to go. he has not experienced any of the mood swings since then or any other side effects. Also a big plus was that his appitate came back in a big way. He takes is pill in the morning around the same time and I give him some cod liver oil pills with it.strattera taken wih ritalin three times a day is the only thing that has helped
even a little with my ADHD symptoms.Your kid is just about a third of my weight and age; I worked up from
25 to 80 as my first level-off trial dose, so it sounds like he's
starting off in a safe low-ish range. Strattera did a little for me for
the first few days, but after that, my body seemed to get used to it
and it stopped affecting my ADD. We upped my dose to 120 and I was
still constantly zoning out/having impulse control issues;
additionally, it made me *very* tired (I slept 11 hours overnight, took
a 90 minute nap just a couple hours after waking up, and then yet
another nap a few hours later). If it seems to be working for his ADHD
but making him sleepy, have him take it just before bed. I've read that
when Strattera works, it works great; but this wasn't the case for me,
as I just felt buzzed plus side effects (stimulants are proving more
effective for me). Best of luck!
My daughter has been on Strattera (40mgs) for about a year after an unsuccessful bout on Concerta (caused her to be very moody and depressed, but her attention was great...)and although she's not as sharp, overall, her impulsivity and her memory seem better. School starts in 3 weeks and we are going to our doc to get a morning-only dose of either Ritalin or Focalin to help her to be a bit sharper in school.
I give her Strattera at night and she hasn't had any stomach pains.
Strattra didn't help me become more organized or more productive but it really made me smarter. I could understand things so much easier. My doctor said it is just cause I could focus better but I felt smarter. It was a good feeling. I am now experimenting with other drugs to help with other symptoms.
