I want to thank all of you that have been of great support to me in a time when I realy needed it.  I just wanted to let you know after talking to dr today they are going to try my son on different meds.  Something maybe like depokote. He has been med free all weekend and still there has been no change in his behavio which leads them to believe that stimulants and other meds are not working for him.  His dr is a neuro psych for all you that were concerned with that.  They are going to do further evaul on him at this time.  They are post phoning the long term facility for now.  Thanks to everyone

hope it works this time

it is a roulette to find the right meds

Keep being strong!!!

Heather, I'm glad they're listening to you, testing your son further and delaying the long-term facility.  My son's first mood stabilizer was Depakote; it took 6 weeks at a therapeutic level to calm his raging, but it worked.  We have now added Lamictal, another mood stabilizer, to work on his depression.  I hope everything works out.  Just remember that mood stabilizer do take time to work.  Good luck.Depakote works great. Ask for the er that allows the child's body to use it as needed thru out the day. it is a 12 hr. dosage. How old is the child they want to try this on . Daniel takes 500mg per day all at once. oldtimer38915.6564699074I hope that the Depakote works for your son!  My daughter has taken it for a couple of years in addition to her Adderall XR, and it has worked great for her!Oldtimers son is getting Neuro transmitter testing done. The Np things he may be Aspergers also. She said no more meds and keep up the depakote since it's helping. Will keep you informed more as the results come in. Wahoo!I'm glad the doc is a neuro-psych and I'm glad you have delayed the long term facility.  I'm not an expert on much, but I was in the first clinical trial in the US and took depakote before it was approved by the FDA.  I took depakote for 20 yrs for seizures (that's why it was originally introduced).  The only problem I had was in the 4 mos with nausea.  After I got over that it was perfect for me.  I switched when I started having acid reflux that was tied to taking the depakote.  My neurologist put me on Lamictal and I haven't had any side effects from that.

Good luck and I'm so glad you don't have to hospitalize your son now.  I hope it all works.
Great news, Heather. Depakote is a mood stabilizer and takes up to eight weeks to work so don't expect fast results. You may want to read "The Bipolar Child" by Dimitri and Janice Papalos (Depakote is for bipolar, not ADHD). It outlines behaviors and meds, and it's a good read. The NeuroPsych should also help a lot. (((Hugs))) and keep posting.
