Se question | ADHD Information

Our Np says attention problems are not a qualification for Se in TX. I was told it can be under ohi by Se. I am so confused now. Can someone help here. .IMac38944.5685763889This depends...ADHD can qualify you however it needs to be determined that the ADHD is severe and greatly impacts educational performance.  Yes the category is OHII dont understand the whole point...if your child is already in special education why do you want the OHI classification?  The type of service your child will recieve will not differ and the IEP should also consider his ADHD when writing goals and making accomodations. My son is in sp due to his reading ability. If he did not have any learning disability he would not qualify with just adhd

According to IDEA ADHD is listed under OHI....I think my son would qualify if he was not on meds.  I don't want special ed services at this time.

oldtimer go look at wrights law and see if you can find the info you need...I know I found it in a book published by CHADD.....I am sure there are parents here who have children who are served in SPED who just have ADHD and are qualified under OHI ( other health impaired)

joemom38917.2300578704The np says adhd isn't a qualifying thing for Se. I guess his Ld is what is aloud to keep him there. Yes he is going to this other school and it's public not private. I am confused cause I am getting told 2 different things.

Psychologists and private diags in general do not have any understanding of SE.  This is the problem you are facing.  They may be great at diagnosing, but they do not have a clue how to get children classified with the diagnosis.  The latter is up to a parent and/or an advocate.

In the state of Texas, ADHD qualifies under OHI.  You can call TEA to verify this, if you choose.

I was asking cause of what the dr. said to me that's all.

OK, guess your doc is wrong or did not explain himself fully.  This is federal law and ADHD can be served under the category of OHI ( not always, but  depending on the impact that the ADHD has on academic performance).

I also think that the child must have the medical diagnosis of ADHD and not just "attention problems".

Yes, I'm agreeing with the above, OHI.  For dd to get an IEP, first she had to show a deficiency with the school psych. exam. (Hers happened to be receptive language, pretty low score there.)  Then we had to supply a letter from her dev ped that she is diagnosed with ADHD.  This all happed in first grade. cr12345mr38917.6146064815
