Don’t Know Where to Get Started. | ADHD Information

Has anyone out there tried any of the natural ADD remedies out. If so were they any good?

I'd be interested in this info too. I don't do any meds after Ritalin made me so unhappy and miserable that I was crying 3-4 times a day. NOT my usual unsinkable self. It was my GP that gave it to me. The Psyc. people told me that inattentives (like me) don't do well on it.

Maybe you were taking too high of a dose. How many mgs was
the ritalin? Or maybe you needed to be treated for depression
too. 5 htp is really good for that. And its cheaper than taking an
anti-depressant. But then, this may not be your case. Maybe
you should try a new medication like Strattera, which has much
less side-effects, atleast from what I've read. I haven't really
been treated myself, so I don't know too much about ADD
meds. I've taken ritalin once. I remember being extra fidgety
and fumbly.

I was taking a child's dose of SR Ritalin once a day. Not anymore; waay too upsetting. I have no depression, which is why the crying and sad thoughts were soooo bizarre. Two days after stopping the meds I was fine. No more crying.

I think knowing what is up with me, and why I am like I am is as much help as the drugs were. More even.

Still, I would be interested in thoughts/opinions about naturals.

What about fish oils?
Here's a good summary of alternative ADD treatments:

http://borntoexplore.org/alternatives.htmI use neurofeedback, phosphatidylserine, and
omega-3 essential fatty acids (flax oil and walnuts).

I am now on Concerta (a time-release refomulation that is similar to Ritalin).

Actually, inattentives like myself tend to do well on stimulants. So I doubt that is the problem. But everyone's chemistry is different. If it makes you fell bad, then don't take it. The whole point of treating ADD is so we can enjoy our lives. If a med makes you feel bad, then it is not helping. I got to that point with Straterra. So Straterra was bad for me and Concerta is good. For others it is the opposite.

We all need to figure out what works best for us. If non-medical treatments (diet, supplements, etc.) like Rosina suggested, then that is great! I would also add exercise to that plan. I take meds bit find exercise and diet help a great deal also.

Good luck!

if exercise is a natural remedy, then i use natural remedies :)

honestly supplements and diet have never had any measurable effect on ADD for me. I didn't even know omega-3's, fish oil, walnuts etc were supposed to help, but they are a big part of my diet for other health reasons. they made no difference to the ADD though, compared to the totally junk food diet I used to eat. lots of difference to my bodyfat levels and therefore my self-esteem though :)

exercise is a great mood-enhancer though. even if you're not ADD.
