No they didn't make him irritable. He was too busy throwing up to be irritable.
He's doing fine on the concerta except for the loss of appetite, which is why we have him off it for the summer.
How is your son doing on Concerta? Did the focalin and adderall make him irritable?
My 9 year old daughter was diagnosed w/ adhd without hyperactivity about 9 months ago. She has tried adderall xr and focalin xr. She focused better on the adderall xr but had horrible meltdowns in the afternoon, threw fits, etc., so we switched to focalin xr. Could not really see a postive result with this, but it did make her irritable in the afternoon just like the adderall. Is there something she can try that won't make her so irritable? Even if it's something that's not extended release. Should we just continue the adderall xr and try to deal with the afternoon meltdowns?
Does ritalin or concerta do the same things?
Thanks
Adderall and Focalin both made my son throw up. We are now on Concerta, which is a form of ritalin. Adderall and Focalin are 'half' the molecule of ritalin (I don't understand that, but it seems that adderall and focalin supposedly use only one part of the ritalin chemical).
Maybe she would do better on one of the drugs that are on the ritalin side of the equation - concerta, medidate, ritalin and now the daytrana patch are the ones that I can think of now.
I just brought my 11 yr old son to the doctor last week because he was soooo irritable and grouchy starting in the early afternoon until he fell asleep late at night. He was taking straterra 40, focalin XR 25. The doctor took him off of the straterra and added the new daytrana patch. wow! what a difference. The patch lasts so much longer than the pills and he gets a smooth even dose until we take the patch off. No more afternoon meltdowns or feeling depressed. He has even mentioned to me how much better he feels. You might ask you DR about it.
Hope that helps
All stimulants have the potential for a person having the same reaction. Having said that, most people react different to every single medication. As you have seen with just the Adderall and Focalin, more focus, less focus, rebound issues with both.
You won't know if the Ritalin family of medicines will do the same until you try them. He may do great with them, or he may have the same reaction.
I personally can not take Adderall, but do great on Concerta. I know people that are exactly the opposite of me- do great with Adderall but not Concerta.
It may be worth it to try the Concerta. If it doesn't work you can always go back to Adderall at that time. If you end up back with Adderall, you might want to ask the doctor about trying out a short acting, low dose, Adderall tablet that you could give about an hour before his long acting one would wear off. Some doctors will do this, some won't. Many times this will smooth out the transition off, and lessen the rebound.
I personally would try the Concerta first though, so that you can cover both classes of medication to see how he does.
Good luck!
