Medications like Strattera | ADHD Information

I used to take ginko biloba before I went on Strattera, but I think it's time to get back on it.  Since my issue was auto-immune, not high blood pressure and clotting problems, strattera was actually a good choice for me vs. stimulants...

I'm going into the doctor's on Thursday due to strattera no longer dealing with ADHD symptoms.  I am a previous stroke victim, which is partly what brought on my ADHD and due to this, I prefer to stay off the traditional stimulants like concerta and adderall.

Does anyone know what medications are in the same family as strattera or what other medications are out there that have shown success with the distraction and short term memory issues of ADHD but aren't in the dexadrine/other stimulant family?

Thanks!

A stroke, or anything else, is not capable of bringing on ADD. ADD is an inherated disorder that will begin to show itself at an early childhood age. I mention that because if you only developed symptoms after a stroke, then you probably have another cognitive condition causing the symptoms.

As for an alternative to Strattera, there isn't one. They even advertise themselves as the "first non-stimulant medication" for ADD.

The only other medicines that "might" help are anti-depressants like Wellbutrin. Some of them have some theraputic benefit for ADD but not near the success rate as the stimulant meds -- although you will need to study up on the side-affects. Try WebMd.com-- they have a good ADD overview section.

But most importantly, consult with your doctor. If he/she doesn't specialize in ADD, then find one who does. This disorder has a number of nuances that the average family MD is unaware of.

Best of luck to you.

Hi MaxDad,

No, I'm a child of ADHD, but as an adult, was able to cope with many of my adult level symptoms until I had a couple strokes due to an auto-immune issue.  Consider my strokes the "icing on the cake" that forced me to turn to medication to deal with my ADHD vs. non-medicated coping techniques.

I suffer from severe vertigo and short term memory problems that add extra pressure to my everyday mental challenges of ADHD.

I am looking to be prepared when I go in to know what my doctor is recommending.  I have found similar dead ends on other options similar to strattera, but was hoping maybe someone here knew something that wasn't as well known on the web.

Thanks,

DT

These meds will have a stroke/heart problem warning labels by the fda. We do Ginko for the short term problem it helps alot. We do vitamins. Our NP said no medacine for Daniel until we know what's going on here. We have to wait until all his testing is done first.
