I know we have considered bi polar, but at the time he did not exhibit all the symptoms.  Still does not.  He does not rage.  He has absolutely every adhd symptom.  I am just kinda lost.  I do not have funds right now for more evals, as I always have to pay several hundred up front, and then when the insurance pays I get reimbursed.  My DH had to quit working due to back pain, and in Oregon there is no short term disability and you cannot get unemployment if you are not physically able to work, and he is not.My son has really improved with high-EPA fish oil and a homeopathic remedy. It takes time though---6 months for my son. I'm going to keep working at it to improve his behavior. I anticipate that it will take years to get it down just right.

He got to 20mg of Focalin xr, and then had some OCD stuff and extreme sensitivety(sp)  With Adderall xr we got to about 20 or 25mg  and the same stuff as above but way worse.  He was on 10mg Focalin xr as well as the Wellbutrin, but was zoned out for about 1-2hrs about 30min after taking the Focalin.  Should I just deal with that?  He has been taking Fish Oil since September or October.

Hi Crazymama,

Not to discourage you, but it took us YEARS to get my son's meds to where they are today. When we were trying to just use regular pediatricians, they were undermedicating. Finally got ahold of a child psychiatrist who had much more expertise in the more complicated med combinations.  My son metabolizes like crazy, thus requires much higher doses than the avg child.

Based on what you've described, it sounds like your child's neurotransmitters are no where near in balance. What type of doctor is prescribing and how high of doses did they try? Did they try several different meds...not 2 or 3, but more? Did they try and stim/antidepressant combinations?

Don't give up.  Keep trying to get the meds regulated.  Also consider behavioral therapy to augment the medications.  Most success stories with ADHD use the multimodal approach.....a combo of meds, therapy, and educational supports along with parental training.   Okiemom

We went to a wedding Sat, and my son caused havoc in the kid's room.  Pushing the playpen around to trying to monopolize the video game.  He has been home with my husband since the beginning of the month, and been hyper and impulsive, but not too bad.  Now I wonder if I am just used to it?  He is on Wellbutrin  and I am not sure if it is doing much.  I need to give the current dose more time to work.  We have tried several stims, and not had much luck.  Focalin xr was the best, but did cause him to zone out when he was home.  I am not sure if it did this at school or the club as there is so much stimulation there.  Will we ever find a med that is tolerable and works?  I get so discouraged sometimes.Who diagnosed him and are you sure you believe he has ADHD? If no stims work, do you think he may have something else? Why is he on Wellbutrin? It's a highly agitating antidepressant and could be contributing to his behavior. Has he ever seen a Psychiatrist (with the MD) or a NeuroPsych for testing? To continue trying what doesn't works, is often just like beating your head against the wall...maybe ADHD meds aren't what he needs.

Don't give up, hon. Hang in there until you find a med that helps his behavior improve. It's difficult to find the perfect balance.

Was he on high or low doses on the stimulants that made him zone out?

Crazymama,

My son is ADHD and after several attempts at stimulants that didn't work, his psychiatrist put him on Wellbutrin.  He has been on Wellbutrin 150mg for about 9 mos. now and he is doing great.  I decreased it to 75mg for the summertime, and he has done well.  We have even cut one of the 75mg in 1/2, and he did fine.  It took about 2 mos. for us to see any lasting changes.  Give it some time if your son hasn't been taking it that long.  I  hope everything works out for your son.

Have you tried alternatives? My son's behavior is better on omegas. I know some of the others have had good results with it also.

I am on Welbutrin and it seems to help me keep my moodiness under control some but not so much that I would put a child on it for that. Omegas actually work better on me for controlling my outbursts.

Were there a lot of kids maybe it was too much stimulation.  I am not sure what else to add except we understand where you are coming from.

Yes, he sees and was diagnosed by a child psychiatrist, with an md.  He takes Omegas, fish oils, and a B-complex once I find one he can take.  Stimulants work, but the side effects are too much.  He gets kinda OCD like, and very very sensitive to everything.  Yes, he was overstimulated.  It seems like everything overstimulates him sometimes.  I just get frustrated.

KM'SMOM  He started on 75mg, then 150mg now 300mg of Wellbutrin for about 3-4 weeks, at the highest dose.

The most effective stim so far has been Focalin xr at 10mg.  Does not control all the symptoms, but 20mg was too much.  Adderall xr bad, Strattera did nothing.

Thanks for listening.

I would suggest you get a second and if needed a 3rd opinion.  If you have tried all the meds you have listed, it would lead me to believe there is more than adhd (more is not the right word, maybe i should say there is a different issue that might not be adhd)
