I found this awesome article put out by the Mayo Clinic. It is a great, not too long, very comprehensive, very easy to read and understand article that is a great read, especially for a newly diagnosed ADHDer. There is one page dedicated to the causes of ADHD, and the parts of the brain affected, and how neural pathways may play into it, which I found fascinating.
Also of interest to me, was the other conditions they list as those that LOOK like ADHD, but are not, one of which I found surprisingly surprising, of all things, sleep apnea. But it sure did make a lot of sense how this article was written, the importance of ruling out other, possibly very serious health problems causing the symptoms of ADHD, and the dangers of being misdiagnosed.
