Is it a hearing problem? | ADHD Information

Share

I think it is the ADHD.  I find especially when I am hyperfocusing, I feel braced against interuptions and don't transition well to a change of focus.

I was wondering if any of you can relate to this.

Sometimes when people start a conversation with me I seem to either not hear them properly or my brain takes a minute to comprehend their words

I will say Pardon? but then as they begin to repeat themselves I realise that I did hear what they sid after all.

This really only happens when I've have been focused on something else when they have started talking to me, not say in the middle of a conversation.

I wonder if it just takes a bit longer for my brain to stop thinking about what I was doing or thinking about  before it can focus on something new?

I don't know what it is but it's bloody annoying

/IMac38943.4306481481I have a partial hearing loss in one ear due to working around heavy equipment.  But, what you are describing seems like moments I have often.  My mind is a lot of places at one time and this happens to me, or I will hear what someone says but my mouth and words don't come out right away.  Sometimes my mouth forgets simple words or names even though my brain is thinking them.  This has gotten better since I found the right adhd meds, but it still happens occasionally.
I'm curious/serious, what do you think about when you're stoned?
Weed makes me think about happy thoughts, and tasks, chores, and ideas that I need or want to do. Also makes me more positive about life and helps me to look to the bright side of things. But what sucks is when the high goes away, I tend to forget some of the great things that I was thinking about when I was stoned.

I also have electronics as a hobby, and IMO it's easier to keep my hands steady and work on a project when stoned. But in some cases when I've been too stoned, it does not help with focus, just makes me feel better. In the past it also has kept me from being suicidal.

Now to try to keep the forum thread on topic........

Now speaking of ADHD and hearing/distractibility, I smoked some passion flower on my lunch break at work yesterday, and I felt focused and happy for the rest of the day, and it was easier to laugh at stuff. It only gave me a very mild "high" for about 30 mins, but never made me feel stoned or slow like weed. After the high was gone, I still felt great. I hope I can use passion flower as a weed alternative.

Websites about passion flower and how it can help anxiety, depression, and ADHD symptoms.

http://www.umm.edu/altmed/ConsHerbs/Passionflowerch.htmlIt' NOT a hearing problem, my ears are fine. It's a listening problem, and sometimes I have to stop and replay what has been said in my head before it 'sinks in'. Usually I have to ask someone to repeat what they've said to make sure I have the right meaning to their statement. You are not alone.Well im pretty sure its the adhd caus ethe same thing always happens to me.
the meds do help a little though. its just that i get distracted so easily by so
many things. Could be the same thing with you.

My dear old Mom used to think I had selective hearing and was stubborn and defiant!!!!

I still do this with my boss a lot - probably cause I don't want to listen half the time.

Maybe I have sap - selective absorption processing!!!
ADHDinsane, are you taking meds for ADHD?
I'm not taking any legal meds for it. I've never been diagnosed by a doctor but with all the weird stuff that goes on in my life and my head for all my life, I'm 100% sure I have ADHD. I'm also very hyper, and CAN'T calm down, especially after any type of adrenaline rush.

I've used Marijuana as a VERY successful drug for my ADHD, it calms me down real well, and allows me to think, and keeps me from being so jittery, but it gets me stoned, and you can't always be really stoned in public, not to mention the $$$ cost of it. But sometimes the herb doesn't help as much as other times. Depends on my mental state I guess.

I've also taken Adderall from other ADHD friends of mine, and it works pretty good. Another thing I'm experimenting with is Passion Flower. I've smoked passion flower and it works so far, and I'm going to make a tea to see if that works even better.

I would not recommend smoking pot for adhd - I am surprised it helps, but maybe you don't have the hyper symptoms I have and have had as a kid.  Pot did absolutely nothing for me as a teenager, other drugs - yup!!!

Go get tested and see if you really have adhd and then get treated!!!  Stop smoking POT!!!

I'm going to agree with LCdc.  Smoking pot is not the answer. And it certainly does nothing for the memory problem.  It makes you think?  About what?  I'm curious/serious, what do you think about when you're stoned?

IMAC - thanks for that, I was thinking OMG I have another issue to deal with and I don't even know what capd is!!!!

I am pretty sure when I do this, it is just a result of not focusing my attention where it needs to be!!

I also have this problem, and I think that it is from getting distracted during the conversation. What did you say, Pieta?  Yep.  Gaps, words missing, lost meanings, zoning out, spacing out.  Thinking what the..., where am I... when I zone back in.    I thought it was ADHD but perhaps I have capd.  .IMac38943.4312384259.
IMac38943.4315972222I am having this problem too. At my new job, (Wendy's) it's really hard for me, because if I get concentrated on something like cooking the burgers, I forget about the other stuff around me, and don't even hear the beeps from the timers going off. I burned some chicked doing that, didn't even hear it go off right behind me.

I used to work at a call center, and I'm thinking this damn ADHD is making a job like Wendy's seem way harder, even though it shouldn't be.it happens to me too

it boils down to I can't believe this person is actually talking to me

this too
That sounds like capd. This is where your brain doesn't hear well. It misses some of what was said. .IMac38943.4309259259What? Classic Central processing disorder trait.  I went to a seminar on it.  I don't know where you live but you can get tested for it at Andrews University in Michagan very cheap.  CPD is when you hear fine and think fine but there is a problem with the connection.  I bet you have problems with backround noises too.  teacher will you post more info aboout CPD please? I've never heard of it.

Pieta,

As someone with moderately severe hearing loss in both ears, I will chirp in here and say that you don't know if it's a hearing loss, unless you have your hearing checked by an audiologist.  I do a lot of what you are talking about, and mine is related to the eye contact I have to have and sustain to pick up some conversations.  I do not wear hearing aids, and never have, though I currently am pricing and researching different kinds.  If you have a hearing loss you were born with or one that has slowly gotten worse over the years, you may not notice it, except in certain situations or when someone points it out to you.  A check by the audiologist is not expensive.  I would get it checked out, then.  Why not?

Hearing loss can cause some of the ADHD symptoms but a diagnosis is more thorough (or supposed to be) than that.  I have tinitus in both ears due to blockage in my eustachian tubes from my teens but my lack of attentiveness to conversations was my trouble not the lack of hearing.

I'm sure it adds to the trouble.  I know when I am in quiet rooms that the ringing is something I need to contend with when listening.  If I'm not totally sure of what is being said I'll repeat it back to be sure.  That is very helpful - something I never used to do.  I used to guess what I thought was said and typically I was way off.

Interestingly I saw the whole to-do about the kids using a hypersonic ringtone for their phones to avoid being detected recently.  What they said is that most adults can't hear it but amazingly I found that not only can I hear it but it's like the most annoying tone I have ever heard.  You'd think at 39 with hearing loss that it would be beyond my hearing but it isn't.
I bet you have problems with backround noises too.
I do, really badly. Go figure.
