I have a child diagnosed with ADHD, his taking Ritalin and he is in ESE (Exceptional Student Education). His mayor problem is reading & comprehension. He has improved, but he is not in the level where he is supposed to be for his age & grade. I'm worry that this situation can lower (even more) his self-esteem, for not been able to get the same achievements as other. This is frustrating for students, for parents & even for teachers. Parents are blamed; Children are blamed or labeled. Schools are blamed. This is a neurobiological problem. This is nobody's fault. But, we all can do something, let put pressure in our political leaders so these kids can get more help. I think by preparing a special program/classes for this kind of disability (with psychologists, neurologists, teachers and parents input)Having these kids in a full time (separate) school with a fully trained personal in this matter & where they don't see themselves as “retarded” because the rest are doing great and they are getting D's or F's, will help so much! If the government has money for special schools & programs for "gifted" students, why not to invest in those who are in a "bigger" academic need. In my opinion everyone will benefit from this, even students who are not ADHD. Medication should not be the only solution, after all, they have side effects, too.

There is between 3%-10% of students with ADHD in US. Isn’t that enough to at least try with a pilot school to see if it work? We need to put these kids back in their normal life, faster and with less medication.

Yes Jail is an option too - No meds or drugs available there. In Nevada we have New Horizons Academy for kids who learn diferently.  Lots of the kids are ADHD and they do a great job with them.  Lots of project based curriculum.  Like they study say France.  They make french foods, math chemestry and life skills.  They plan a trip to France with a budget.  Math map skills computer skills.  They make a travel brochure to advertise their trip.  English composition etc etc.  It's very interesting but not many parents are willing to pay.  Interestingly very few parents are willing to pay for a gifted academy either.  And gifted kids really learn differently! I am sorry... I know many would pay if they could!  I re read my post and that sounded really rude!!!

Has anyone researched present day schools and checked out any programs directed to adhd children??? Are the programs sucessful? I have looked in the la area for a school and found one too far away and $28000.00 a year.  Who has that kind of money?? I would like to have a public school program these kids could benefit from. I am willing to try a school specifically for adhd kids.  Let's write our congressman, educators etc...

No one has to be still to learn at all. This add/ adhd is really a hands on learning style. Classes need to be totaly multisensory. To many staff are to lazy to teach things this way. Politicians kids all attend private schooling. Most stuff today is going computerized. A education can all be done home bound. Homeschool coop. little league sports/Scouts/ Marshall arts/Religious youth groups can take place of all social things at school. School is about a education that's it. Here in Plano tx at the adhd school they have all basics are like a Se class. The rest are like mainstream. They even teach social skills help. The school is Private and called Great Lakes academy. You must visit 3 times to see if it is the right match. well adhd isnt that big of a deal to have a whole special program/class for it, I don't think. People with ADHD are coincidentally more intelligent than the average public, although there is no proof that adhd is related in any way to intelligence....
