My Sucky Story | ADHD Information
oh thank you soo much!!  That makes me wonder how you "learning the hard way" by not being diagnosis is not really a good thing.  you know, the "reality factoid" making you smarter by having more challenges  that you, yourself, had to learn from, in which, made you the strong person you are today.  Do you think meds cushion the internal strength of a child, thus hindering there capability to learn, on there own,  just how adhd affects there lives and others?
Tough to answer - I think if you love your kid and support them without degrading them all the time it will be good.  Make sure you have the right diagnosis and are treating him for the sake of helping him understand that he is unique and that he is not defective!!!

Don't treat him for the sake of trying to change who he really is going to become as he matures.  If you don't let him develop and understand and accept his adhd and then move on, his frustrations will come out in all kinds of unnaceptable ways, maybe.  I don't regret things that happened in my life too much, I just kinda feel bad for what could have been with more understanding along the way - you cannot bend someone to your will for the wrong reasons!!!  I think in general, adults forget that kids are entitled to some respect also and that they have feelings that need to be accounted for!!!

Have clear guidelines and be consistent, and if you are totally frustrated yourself, don't take it out on your kid!!!  I forgive some of the adults in my life for being frustrated and totally understand that they made some decisions based on the best knowledge they had at the time!!!  It still sucks though!!!

Sorry, I got off on a rabbitt trail there for a minute!!!

The good news about college....at least for me.....is that the professors are much more laid back - "hey, it's your money to waste" attitude and give you more space.  I always recorded the lectures so I could go back and review my notes and books at my own pace later.  That is where all MY learning took place.  EVeryone is different though.   A good study buddy is a great asset as well....they can sometimes explain things differently that you didn't catch in class.  You'll figure out what works for you - but it is a different atmosphere than high school!!

Good luck!!!

well I let my child be who they are, although he is on meds at the moment.  I was wondering if I stopped the meds and let him learn, through our guidence, that he would be able to deal with Adhd symptons better as a teenager/ adult.  (I guess I was raised the old fashion way and i'm wondering if I should pass those "ways of thought" along in my life to my child) might be tough in the beginging, but will they become a better person on how to deal with ADHD.  This is all my mind going haywire on how best to raise my ADHD child.  He is loved , given support, and no degrading what so ever! Right now  he is on meds and doing wonderful, but like ive read before, in the old days this was not know about, and yet there are people out there who have learned (might it be the hard way) how to deal with ADHD...  aka then HYPER CHILD WITH TOO MUCH CANDY!  per my grandparents. hehehe oh thank you soo much!!

LOL!!  One thing I know about ADHD ...  they're honesty is true and right in your face... whether you like it or not.  hehe Shew.. there are days i wish i could be that person!!  But, in light of your humor or maybe its just my humor from above, ....  I totally understand where you are coming from.  I'll keep your "vent" in mind.  Maybe one day i'll need to know that "reality check" before it actually happens.   Vent anytime...  I'm here to listen and learn.

You learn from anything that doesn't kill you.  I don't know how much his symptoms affect him, but I had to go through hell until I was out of the kid and teenage years to learn what I did.  Trouble at school and home turned into trouble with the law and stays in hospitals.  There was a lot of repair work to do to get to the core of things before I could really deal with adhd when I became an adult!!!  I am still getting over some of that crap!!!

If I was a kid this day and age, I still believe it would have been hard either way.  I could not have learned a whole lot, I guess, because my mind could not stay still enough to wrap around one or two concepts.  Medication may have given myself enough calmness to focus on what I was supposed to be learning and feeling.  It might have helped?  There are many times my daredevil behavior brought me close to getting myself killed or maimed.

It sounds like you are a great parent that wants to do the right thing!!!!  That is half the battle!!!  Good luck on it and thanks for letting me vent!!!  WOW - I did not know I had it in me to go there!!!    See what happens when the mediction wears off for the night!!

ptgally -

I don't know which is best.  There are definetely benefits to both approaches.  However, I think whether he is on medication or not, your support and understanding will help him grow into a fine adult.

oh crap... you guys are bumming me out!  I'm a parent of a 6 yr old that has adhd... and honestly can not function "as the common folk would like to say it" with out his meds.  I was hoping that as he get older he will realize when he is having "a problem" and deal with it best he can. (hopefully right choices of course).....  but from the sounds of the poster'er...  its a hit or miss.  Shew how do parents protect there child????

Oh and for note i do not mean to be insulting in anyway...  I learn from you guys and it makes me a more understanding of what is to come, and how to be a good parent about it.

No insult taken!!!    No 2 people are alike and I can function without meds, just not with a great outcome at all times. For some of us older folks (speaking for myself only) we did not have the diagnosis and understanding that kids have today about adhd.  Maybe if we had learned some coping skills a long time ago it would have helped, maybe not!!!

Don't know what your son acts like now - but compared to how I was as a kid and how I am now there is a big difference!!!  So don't worry too much.  I believe I am highly functioning and a contributer to society.  Steer your kid in the right direction now, like any kid, and give them the tools they need and they can suceed just as I do!!!!

I will expand my search as you suggested.  Thank you. I haven't started medications yet?  Do they really not work? For me they work well, not a cure all though!!!  Why do you have a headache??  On Friday I was in a conference that lasted 9-5.  Off course I had a hard time concentrating.  Since I got out I have a headache.

Also, my psychologist has asked me to see a psychiatrist for medical evaluation.  I left message with many shrinks.  Some called me back saying they don't deal with ADHD.  Are there special shrinks for ADHD?
YEs, I had one when I was 9. Havn't seen him in awhile though.

Yes there are ones that specialize in this.  Sometimes in a smaller town they are hard to find.  Expand the area you are looking in maybe.  I have to go 1.5 hours to see a specialist once a month, it  is worth it!!!

I used to get headaches a lot prior to taking adhd medications, since I have been on them they are far and few between.  Good luck.

sorry about the title of this forum. i was upset that day, but now im over it. i
posted basically the same thing under the title any ideas for college right
after i wrote this realising that i gave this a really bad title. because i guess
my life isnt too bad.Hm, I used to get headaches ALOT when I was younger, but they seemed to decrease with time. I was on Ritalin then, but I don't see the connection between the 2.College is much completely different from High School. As long as you do your home work and do what you think is appropriate you should not get in trouble. I am in college and believe me, there are some really big idiots in a majority of my classes. They are the kind of people who are in college because they have nowhere else to go and are too lazy to get a job. Its those kinds of people that teachers hate. After reading through a lot of your postings you seem like a pretty cool and determined person. You are going to do just fine. Your a strong person you just gotta stay positive and make sure you don't stress yourself out because of school; you gotta have your play time, your brain needs it!! Of course this will be my first year in College on a ADHD medication... I guess we are gunna figure  it out together on that one! -good luckthanks. good luck to you too.college started monday. so far im doing alright.

I think everyone of us could tell lots of sucky stories, it is okay to have bad days!!

The thing I try to remember about bad days is that there are lots of good ones out there and the bad days make the good ones so sweeeeet!!!

I could write a novel on all the bad stuff that happened in my life because of the way god made me, people would get depressed - but it would have an awesome ending if I finished it today!!!  Life is good!!!

Well, Since age 6 I've been on different
medications for ADHD. None of them ever really fully worked. Anyway
(got distracted by the funny )
faces on the side of the screen .) So now I'm going off to college and I
am so glad to be out of high school. It was terrable! The
teachers were always yelling at me to sit still. I did manage to pull of a 3.7
though. If I did all of my homework on time I could have had a 4.0 oh yeah i
missed some points for not paying attention to detail too. So anyway I hope
college isn't like highschool. I hate being yelled at. Anyway any advice on
how to help me sit stil and consintrate besides (which I am already doing)
meds and therapy? Please help! I don't want oto be known as the kid who
can't sit still again!

I pm'ed you back - reading your postings I am having flashbacks to my youth!!!  You sound like you have your act together a lot better than I did at that age.

I used to be so impulsive my family and friends were surprised I made it past 20!!  I used to do things just cause someone dared me to - like jump out of the back of a moving pickup truck or trying to jump over a friends little car that was coming at me!!!  When I was on the Hotshot crew outta college I would do things for money like eat live crickets and bugs.  Made a lot of money on those things!! Crazy - No, just unaware of any consequences at that age!!

It is still hard for me to sit still.  I would just say that in college, get your core courses over with and look forward to the courses that are geared towards your major.  I had a real hard time focusing on things like political science and literature courses.  I almost failed accounting!!  But once I got into my core major courses - I hit the deans list and beyond for my last 2 years of college!!!  Find a career that is suited for your personality also - if you need high adrenaline to focus - figure out what that means to you.  If you are good at your job - people tend to forgive you for being high energy.  I can overcome some of my adhd symptoms because of the job I have and I can get away with hyperness that probably would not fly in most conventional jobs.  You will do fine I am sure!!

Thanks LCdc! I'll keep that in mind. I think i will look for a job where im not
around too many people so they won't notice how hyper i am. and ill also
take my meds. I'v dne most of the carzy things you have mentined and more
when i didnt take my meds. to this day i have never turned down a
dangerous dare. i do turn down the dares to shut up though. thanks again! On the career thing: I have worked in clincial research labs for years and the work is very active an alot of fun. I now have more administrative duties but can get up every 1/2 hour or so to check on things or get information that I need. Alot of different personalities work with me and the jobs change and evolve which keeps my interest. Hopefully, you can find something you love, and where your ADHD in a advantange.I sure do hope so. I do need a job with a lot of action but a job where i cant
easliy be distracted. oh well . cant have it all.
