How can this be? | ADHD Information
What is the difference? The doctor that diagnosed Trevor with ADHD is a Neurologist specializing in sleep disorders and ADHD. He put Trevor thru a lot of tests and such before talking to us about medication. Now SSI (the PA psych) says that Trevor does not have ADHD so we were turned down. How can this be?SSA always turns people down in general you have to appeal it, they do not want to give money away. I work with the disabled and they even have a hard time getting benefits the key is the more documentation the better. If the appeal fails you need to find an attourney to help and that takes about a year sometimes year and a half but worth it. Just remember if you do eventually win the case down the road they will owe you back money starting from the time you first applied so keep the paperwork and denial letter. Yes I have delt with this for people on my caseloads. The more documentation of disability the better and you have to prove how it affects their daily life is the key.Thank you! Seems like a huge hassle but I know it will be worth it if it will help me pay for his extra things he needs.Thank you.If he just has the dx. of ADHD, it will be hard to get SSI. My friend works in disabiity. It's hard to get disability, period. You have to keep trying. Never heard of anyone getting SSI for ADHD though, doesn't mean nobody ever has.ADHD is listed in the SSI rules as a disability, so it is possible to get SSI for it, but I have also heard that it's really hard to get for ADHD. I would definitely appeal though, as many many people get denied on the first try. Good luck!Yeah they would rather give it to a lady who gets it for a hurt shoulder yet she can pick up railroad ties! This world makes no sence sometimes.trevors_mom, I know a lady who had two heart attacks who couldn't get it. My friend had terminal cancer and couldn't get it because she didn't work enough hours in her life. It's not that cut and dried. It's very hard to get disability. ADHD is not usually so debilitating that the child is "disabled" unless there is more going on. Is he in regular school? Sometimes special ed placement can help out, but the child has to really have a severe disability. I don't know for sure, but I don't think anybody here has disability for a child with stand alone ADHD. A lot of parents with kids who have various degrees of autism get disability, but not anyone I've heard of with a child who has ADHD. You can certainly keep trying. Get documentation from the doctor that he is disabled. That's the key. Know that the "disability" tag will follow him through adulthood, so make sure he's really disabled.MomWI38934.5637615741Is Trevor a child? I've NEVER heard of a child getting SSI for ADHD. I've definitely heard of adults getting SSI for severe mental/emotional disabilities, but even that is extremely difficult today. It often takes an attorney who specializes in SSI to get it, which is what we did to get it for my fifty-year-old sister, who has psychotic depression and what we suspect to be Asperger's. She's not worked for ten years, is completely incapable of working, and was hospitalized for six months last year. Still, we had to fight like he!! to get her SSI. But a child with ADHD? I've never heard of it. he is a child but I know he would do better if I could afford to pay for sports and such. Oh Well I am having him looked at for AS and HFA. He has more than ADHD I think we will see.If so, be sure he sees a NeuroPsycologist. We have an ASD kid, and it's hard to get a diagnosis. Many professionals don't know how to spot it. It took us nine years.
