Soccer for Adhd | ADHD Information

Both of my kids are ADHD

I had put Amber (now 8yrs old) in Soccer for this past Spring. She really enjoyed it. And it seemed to alleviate some of the anger she had built up. I had also read an article saying that it was good for ADHD kids to play this particular sport because they are having to focus more on the ball and where they are kicking it to and trying to stay in the pack. So this past month I signed both of them up for it. Charles(now 6.5yrs old) wanted to play when Amber was playing in the Spring and he was too little so this time we did. Hopefully they will do better in school and at home.

Hi there!

My 8 year old ds (who also has ADHD) has been playing soccer since he was 4 years old and yes, it has been a great sport for him.

He loves the "action" as he puts it and it has been a great way to spend his energy.  He also loves being part of a team.

My son has played since he was four. We did not know about his ADHD until he was 11. No other sport could hold his interest like soccer.

But at 11 he started meds and we shall a huge difference in his playing. Instead of implusively kicking a ball...he focused and kicked it to ANOTHER person. WOW.

He is now 13 and his coach says that he has promise. Who knows...we are not counting on anything. But I do know that soccer and his meds have been the right combo for success for him.

It is a great sport!

Both my girls did soccer for the first time last spring.  DD w/ADHD had a tough time catching on, it seemed.  Her mode of play when she was on offense was to run behind the pack of girls, nowhere near the ball!  Our league seems rather competitive, though, even though they didn't keep score!  But she seemed to like it OK.  They are both doing a soccer camp next week through the YMCA.  I figured that would be the most non-competitive route.  They will also play in the local league this fall again.  My other dd loved soccer.  So much that she said she wants to be a professional when she grows up!  I've been playing soccer since i was 6 and iv been on a travel team since i
was 7 but i quit at 18. I actually was entertained for a whiile when i played.
but the long drives were bad. I would suggest a rec team rather than a travel
team.I was happy to read this about soccer-I was about to post the same question. My 7 year old wants to play but I was not sure how his ADHD and soccer would mix...I am going to let him join and I bet he will love it too. Worse thing that can happen...we join something else if it doesn't work out.

As a youth soccer coach for the past 6 years - try soccer for any youth.  It is great for all kids!!!

My kids have played since they were 4 years old.  They don't have adhd (to the best of my knowledge).  I have pretty severe adhd hyper symptoms and soccer was one of my saving graces as a kid.  I grew up over seas in a military family and one of the few times I felt truly calm and at ease, was on the soccer field!!!

It is fast paced and active for all players as they progress - that helps my focus and there is little chance to get distracted - a good coach keeps all the kids active in drills and the games keep them engaged!!!

Agreed on the swimming--my kiddo had a tough timem at soccer because she would play goalie and forget that she'd need to be watching for the ball...in swimming, it's like they're in a water vault and there aren't many distractions for them. Swimming and computers are great for ADD/ADHD kids because they are concentrating with little to no outside distractions.

Our three year old loves to swim and becomes quite relaxed
in the pool.

Hope this helps.
