Hi,

My daughter has ADHD and I was told that she needs and IEP. Has anyone gone through this and if so, can I get some advice on how to do this?

Thank you :)

Hi! I am new to this board, too!  I have gone through many, many IEP's with my son. He is 8 1/2 yrs old now and his IEP's go as far back since he was 3 yrs old. With concerns (and diagnosis) in hand, go into your daughter's school and ask for an IEP meeting. They may ask you what your concerns are, you tell them and let them know about the diagnosis for the Dr, then a meeting will be set up to go over concerns, goals etc for your daughter.  I have found them to be very helpful. For us anyway, we met three times a school year to see how things were progressing. Good luck!

I was told that she might just need the 504 being she is ahead in somethings. Math is not her greatest, but she isn't too far behind on that. She is a very smart kid.

Thank you all for all your responses, definately helps to know that we are not alone.

I would have her evaluated by the school - including her IQ test.  My daughter (ADHD) ended up getting a combined Gifted/Other Health Impaired IEP.  It took a long time for all the testing, meetings, etc. but so far it seems to be helping.  Good luck!

Getting an IEP for a child with ADHD (soly- and no co morbid LD) can be difficult and the child has to show that he/she is having great academic problems....many children who do not qualify for special education services may still benefit from a 504 plan which can specify accomodations that a child requires and will recieve.

The special education category of OHI (other health impaired) is typically the category that the child with ADHD will recieve services under if determined eligible.

Thank you I will check out the link. I do have a doctor's diagnosis. This is all new to me. Thank you for your response and help! :)You need a dx from a physician, preferably a neuropsychologist, and you need to be able to demonstrate that she has needs that require special accomodations, such as extended time for taking standardized tests, etc.  Don't let the school do the dx, as they always take forever and they never want to do anything that will cost them more money than they are already spending.  Sit down with her teacher, the special ed teacher for her grade, the principal and anyone else who has knowledge of what kind of needs she has.  The SE teacher has done this millions of times and will take you through what accomodations are available for your daughter.

Lillian's right, you can get all sorts of info from the "ADHD issues in school" board.

There is a ton of information about this on the forum.  If you go to the education section, you will find the information.

I thought an IEP is used for children in special ed. If she is not in special ed, I don't think she needs one. If all possible, keep her out of special ed. I heard it's worse than hell while in there, and most likely your child will be mistreated.

good,

an IEP provides special education services ( special education is a service not a place ---or at least it is not supposed to be)

IEP is also for those who have ADHD. Thank you.My principal I work for shared with me that in the event I need services for my son when he starts school that I would most likely have to go with a 504 as he is academically ahead of the game.  IEP under Special Educ is not an easy route, as typically the child's ad/hd can not qualify him unless he is academically having difficulty as a result of his ad/hd. Hope this helps.  I just asked this question today as I am planning ahead for the future.

Getting an IEP is not something you can just ask for. (it takes a while for the evaluation and eligibility decision)...if you do get one for ADHD then you ARE in special education under the category of OHI ---which stands for Other Health Impaired...many students may qualify because they also have a co-morbid learning disability and will qualify under the LD category ....

MY son has ADHD and does not have an IEP

Is your daughter having academic difficulty?
