Hi everyone,
I've lurked here off and on and found this board to be a fantastic resource. I'll be brief, and hopefully one of you out there can help a frustrated mom.
Son is 9. Diagnosed with ADHD at 5; after much soul-searching, met with a psychiatrist who evaluated my son two weeks ago and prescribed Adderall. After a week on the meds, he developed a tic--throat-clearing. Called doc; he and his office people were no help--said I had to decide for myself. Doc offered me LESS THAN FIFTEEN MINUTES in an office visit to discuss my options. Screw him. My son deserves better; all our kids do. I don't care how busy they are. If they're too busy to care, they shouldn't be working with kids.
I'm looking for a new psychiatrist in the Allentown/Easton/Philly area, but am willing to travel to NYC. The meds worked well for him, but the constant throat-clearing is clearly a potential social issue, and a doctor who will not discuss this with a mother is not a doctor I like or trust.
Can anyone recommend a good psychiatrist who will actually work with me, and not simply write a script and wave you out of the office? Or is there a site I can go to to find one?
Thanks for any help you may be able to provide. I appreciate it.
Actually, it may not have been a throat clearing tic. Both adderall and focalin gave my son dry mouth, which caused him to constantly clear his throat, which I guess is a 'tic', but there's a physical reason for it.
He was switched to Concerta. I would suggest you maybe look into a children's hospital - they may have a behavioral pediatrics unit. We go to the Schneider Children's hospital here on Long Island and the doctor is great.
Good luck.
Funny you said that cause Focalin gave my son a clearing throat thing, especially at night. The doc said it was a tic. Wierd cause we took him off for a week, and it went away, then put him back on and it hasn't come back. Go Figure.
