My 3 year old son..... | ADHD Information

I agree with Hummous...get a second opinion.  There are too many developmental things going on that meds can disrupt at this stage.

Definately get a second opinion.  My son was about 2 1/2 when we started to notice more impulsiveness and hyperactivity than other children his age.  We monitored and worked with him the best we could until he was 4 1/2.  We started Adderrall because his preschool was about to kick him out.  It worked wonders.  We recently stopped it because he developed an eye tic and I was very worried about he would handle kindergarten without meds.  He has done great.  I really believe working with him at such a young age and teaching him deep breathing and relaxation techniques has helped.  He does have some problems with attention but his teacher has been great about reminding him.  Try very hard to work with your son and avoid meds until you have no other choice.  Read all that you can about ADHD and apply the techniques you find.  And by the way, I work in the mental health field with children so I have seen many ADHD kids in my time.  I always tell my client's parents to wait until you have no choice but to try medication.  Educate yourself on ADHD as well as the people your son interacts with.  I really believe you can see ADHD in very young children but I also believe you can start at a young age to teach them to handle the impulsiveness without meds.  Good luck - and read, read, read...Yup my boy had reduced me to a puddle of misery, heartbreak and exhaustion before I succumbed to meds (he was 7).  There will come a time, when you know you have tried everything else and can make the decision guilt free.  So just keep doing what you can by eliminating any other possibilities before you are certain the only course that will help him is medication.

My three year old son was recently diagnosed with adhd. i took him to a nuerologist and he wants to put him on meds. Is this too young? has any one eles children been diagnosed this young? My son is so smart for a 3 year old but his attention problems and hyperactivity makes me feel like i have five kids instead of one. my concern is that not only will the meds help the problem but will they take away all the things i love and enjoy about my child? hes so young and im worried im makeng the wrong decision to put him on meds. Can anyone give me advise on this? I would truley appreciate it.

                                                                          Thank You.

PLEASE DON'T DON'T DON't Put a 3 year old on meds!!!! There has to be something really compelling about putting a child youger than 6 on meds. I beleive this is the generally accepted conventional wisdom as well. I wouldn't even trust a diagnosis of ADHD for a 3 year old!!

What in the world could a 5 year do that would warrant in-school suspension for 3 weeks?! I thought it was against the law to have in-house for more than 5 days straight.

Hummous38258.3787847222he was put in in school suspention every afternoon for 3 weeks, my son having oppisional defiance disorder as well as adhd kept jumping on others and being very distractive to the class. He was not l;earning anything and he developed a relationship with the in school suspention lady that he eventually liked going to the inschool suspention class.

I agree, we waited until we could wait anymore my son was 5 when we put him on meds because he had ODD wiht the ADHD and was kicked out if summer camp and in in school suspention for the first 3 weeks of school...

I would wait until you cant wait anymore.

Sounds pretty outrageous to me. How is he doing now that he is on meds? Does he still get in trouble?

He is a whole different child on his meds.. he can sit and participate in the school activities and understand what is going in.
