My son has been on Concerta 18 mg for about 10 months. It has worked extremely well for him (and as luck would have it, it was the first med we tried)which appears to be unusual at least according to the posts I have read her, and also my ADHD parents support group.
Good luck, hope you find something that will work for your child.
My 9 yr old is taking concerta he is on 54 mg every morning as he has severe ADHD and without the tab's his a ngtmare no sence of danger ect nyway he has been taking these since he was 6 when he was diagnosed and they wrked rlly well for his behavior and concentrating but as for sleep and eating that wasnt good and still isnt im in the process of changing his meds as there not as effective as when he first started them i do feel they have helped my son exspecially at school as they wouldnt cope without him on med's,it's not helped his eating he goes 2 bed but in the middle of the ngt his starving so he literally pig's out untill he is full as where his not eaten during the day he is starving,he did lose a bit of weight which was worring for me as he vry skinny anyway but the doc's said its nothing 2 worry abt so his still on them at present but he may even need smething 2 help him sleep but overall they are good and they do wrk for my son but just not as good as b4 maybe because his been on them to long he maybe use 2 them i dont no, but all i can suggest is try them and see how u feel abt them as evry1 different and they may work wonders for your ds
hope evrything wrks out keep us posted
I take Concerta and I love it. No side effects at all. It's been a really great medication for me. The thing about stimulants is that everyone responds differently to them. You will hear people that hate it, people that love it, and people that just think it's okay. It will be the same with every other stimulant as well, because they just work differently for everyone. You don't know which one will work until you try them.
Good luck!
About 170 mg of conseta 4 times a day worked great for me when i wasMy 10yo daughter was taking concerta (she is on a break to gain some weight until just before school starts). She was started on 18mg then increased to 27mg in the morning. She has been doing very well on the 27mg; she even started reading (she hated to read before) and at first was falling asleep well for the fist time in her life. After a couple weeks on the 27mg, it started wearing off earlier and earlier. The doctor will be adding a second dose in the afternoon when we restart the concerta just before school. The doctor is not comfortable increasing the individual dose because of the weight issue. Instead, he has added quanfacine (tenex) which does not help with attention but helps with weight gain, caliming, memory and sleeping. When school starts, we will work on optimizing her meds. So far, I like concerta and am looking forward to getting it optimized for the demands of school.
Hopefully others that are farther along will answer your query.
Hi everyone. I have my eight year old son on stratera and he's not having much luck. I have been doing some reasearch, and so far Concerta is catching my attention. Does anyone have opinions on Concerta.good or bad. i welcome all opinions.
I feel that best people are the parents who live with ADHD kids, not always Drs. and therapists who see them only for a short time. (NO OFFENSE TO Drs. OR THERAPIST......THEY"RE GREAT, TOO)
Thanks.
Hello and welcome. We tried Strattera for about 6 months before we were no longer seeing benefit. I think a lot of people here have had a similar experience. It works for a while, then it stops. We then added in Concerta at a small dose. We gradually increased the dosage to 36 mg. Then she had a "flat" affect, meaning the dosage was too high. The next lowest dose, 27 mg, was not enough as she was not concentrating during the morning hours at school. I also found that her personality changed for the worse during that period, but I'm not sure it was the Concerta doing it. She is back to her happy self now (knock wood). We discontinued Concerta in early June and are now on Ritalin LA 20 mg in the a.m., and short acting Ritalin 10 mg in the afternoons to counteract rebounding. With Concerta, the pill releases 20% of the dosage immediately (5.4 mg for a 27 mg pill), and the remaining 80% later in the day. That didn't seem to work so well for her because I think she needed a bigger dose up front. The rebound seemed to be worse, also. With Ritalin LA, 50% of the dose is released immediately, 50% 4 hours later. Are you asleep yet?
She also experienced loss of appetite (also while on Strattera) and sleep issues. So we use melatonin to help her sleep. That is our story. Lots of folks on this board have had success with Concerta, though. All kids are different and respond diffently to medications. It's a little bit of trial and error to find the right med or med combo. Good luck!
