Doctors appointments and prescription | ADHD Information

Does anyone have to actually go in each month and "see" the doctor to get
your prescription refilled? Or, do you just call and go in to pick up the
prescription from the office staff?

For some reason, our pediatrician's office says we have to have an appt to
see the doctor each time we need a refill. Which is once a month. We are
currently on Daytrana and so I can only get a 30 day supply. I just seem to
remember the doctor saying we could just call and let him know we needed
another prescription written. But, we would have to see him every so often
to check in and make sure things were okay.

I dont want to pay for an office visit just to get another prescription refill.
Just curious to hear of your experiences. Thanks! We just call or e-mail and then go pick up the scrip. We have to go in monthly as well for the medicine and checkup.  It bugged me at first but I guess I'd rather they do this than not do follow-ups.  This way the doctor remains on top of things.  I can however if I choose do mail order for 3 months.  Still have to do monthly visits.  I assume because of the type of drug and it is a safety matter.

We can only get a 30 day supply of Concerta, as well.  But all we have to do is call in the fact it is time for refill to doctor, then go and pick up the paper prescription to be filled.  My son sees his doctor every 3 months.

I would definetely ask the doctor his/her reason why your child needs to be seen every month, on your next visit.

I live in Ontario, Canada. So our doctor visits are covered by OHIP. We see him once every 3 months.I was thinking the same thing...that we would be seen every 3 months or so,
but be able to pick up the paper script when we ran out every month. This
is already costing a ton of money...even with the insurance. Between the
psychologist, the pediatrician and the medication, we are gonna go broke.
And this just started in April!

If I thought there were any problems, I wouldn't definately call for an appt
sooner than 3 months. But, if everything is going fine, I don't see a need to
be seen every month. So, I'm not sure what we'll do. I hate to try and switch
dr's at this point. We see the doctor every three months, but phone each month for the script, which they deliver to the pharmacy (it's inside the same building). My son goes once a month for a therapy session with a psychiatrist and gets his med refills then.  I'm done with Dr.'s giving ADHD meds, without a therapy session.  I will only take my son to a psychiatrist who does both. I have to go in each month and see the doc. to get my script, because he
says it is a controlled substance. But i have to go once a week anyway for
therapy.
