Your opinion - Destructive behav. | ADHD Information

Hi all.  Long time no post!!

Anyway, I have an 8 1/2 year old ADHD/ANX/DEP.  On Concerta.

Do any of you have problems with your children distroying things?  Is this a part of ADHD, boy-hood, or something else.  I hate to read into things, but I'm just curious of your thoughts.

He takes everything that is electronic apart.  Mainly battery items.  remotes, toys flashlights ect.., all the backs are taken off, lost, screws lost and batteries gone.  he even takes about electronic items like, remote control cars ect...  I then find all sorts of bits and pieces all over when I clean his room.

He also destroys stuff, and I wonder if this is done out of frustration and it is a way he deals with his anger at a situation.  He has picked the drywall of several screw areas in his bedroom  - so now there is a nail head exposed in several spots.

Anyone have any experiences to share??

When mikey was younger, he used to distroy toys & bash them til they broke, that was his playing, his mum used to go mad trying to tell him not to & in the end we throw away everything he broke & did'nt replace it.

He learned by it, but it took about two years.

When my brother was little he used to take things apart, like radio's & remote controls for no reason, they would be in fully working order, then he would put them all back together again. He does'nt have any adhd problems though so it may just be something he likes doing, like a hobbie.

My DH who is aspergers did this as a child and my DS who is ADHD does now.  He has a special tupperware box that contains the parts of the toys he has taken apart and is allowed to assemble and disassemble those whenever.  DS has to ask us before he takes anything else apart.

On the upside, this behaviour was demonstrative of my DH's exceptional technical aptitude and curiosity about how things work.  It may get screws in the carpet, but on the other hand a engineering/technical career is a great place to be.

Yes. My son is 8 1/2 yrs old and on Concerta as well.  As where he does not take electronic things apart like your son, my son is destructive in other ways. He will shread any type of paper, dryer fluffs (yes, we have these lieing around the house lol), cards, anything he can tear into little pieces... he has it in hand and will destroy it. Not intentionally as he has an extremely kind and soft heart... he just does it. He has also picked the drywall off the screw heads like your son.

Pop cans he will mangle, ice cream containers and plastic spoons, mangled.  I've counted on this as being a phase but it's been going on for quite a few years.  He also will chew on anything he can get his hands on (finger nails especially) and he picks and pulls the skin off his finger tips so much so they bleed. This affects his writing which he is already struggling at very much.

Anyway, not sure if that helped any. I can understand where your coming from in the things your son does. = )

Well I'm 19 ad a girl and i like to destroy things still. It helps me to get my
anger out and i know this sounds weird but when i'm bored, it's just plain
fun. I'm not sure why.I have heard about kids who like to take things apart.  One solution is to have a bin full of stuff that he is allowed to take apart, like old radios, etc.  That should satisfy his need to see how things work.

Has he ever been evaluated for autism spectrum disorder?

Another thought:  The stimulants (like Concerta) can increase anxiety and depression.  How are his anxiety and depression being treated?
