Adderall cost 1--wtf?! | ADHD Information
Supposedly walgreens is the only pharmacy that carries desoxyn - the most powerful add med of them all. It's just pure methamphetamine hydrochloride. But I'm good with this adderall here. I've always wanted to try dexedrine. How is it? Or have you tried it yet?Dextedrine didnt work for me at all. Really?dextroamphetamine is allegedly the most recreational one. Hmmm, well to each his own.I saw my psychiatrist today and, after semi-success with Adderall XR and Dexedrine, we've decided to go with Adderall IR in 3 daily 10-15mg doses. My insurance is through a major hospital/school of medecine, and my mom's mentioned that it's sometimes cheaper for us to get our meds at pharmacies affiliated with the hospital system. I tried taking it to an affiliated pharmacy, but they didn't have enough pills to fill the whole Rx, and won't have any more until next week, which doesn't really work.
So I took it to Walgreens instead. 135 of the 10mg pills, a 30-day supply, rang up as 1, WITH insurance. Whiskey tango foxtrot. I left it there, and they said they'd call my doc to approve generic; I'm going to look up other affiliated pharmacies and see if they can give me any estimates.
Everyone I've talked to, including my doc, has said that IR is generally cheaper than XR. I had a two-week trial supply of XR filled last week, 30 of the 15mg pills, and I don't know how price is determined, but per milligram, IR is three times the cost of XR. When the doc was writing up the prescription today, he offered a choice between name-brand and generic, and I chose name-brand because, from his explanation, it seems to be more consistent/standardized (generic is allowed some margin of error when it comes to the exact mg per pill, and different delivery/filler substance is used).
The XR was only for the amount prescribed, or about 5 cents per mg, and the trial of Dexedrine I had filled along with it was only for 30 of the 5mg pills. Admittedly, these were filled at the hospital-affiliated pharmacy, but it still seems so weird that, you know, something as potent as Dexedrine cost only pocket change but Adderall is my whole paycheck.
I'm aware that Adderall is notorious for abuse by young people/students and illegal sale and such, but dammit, I kind of need this stuff for school, you know? Can't I just write a note promising I'm not going to peddle it on campus?
SOOO: Should I have chosen generic? Is Walgreens pharmacy sucky as a rule, or is my insurance just loath to cover stimulant medication? Is there any discount/assistance available for people who already have insurance, but whose coverage is inadequate? Anyone have advice? I'm going to make some phone calls soon and find stuff out, but help would be appreciated.
Well, it's not always a good thing to do, but in your situation I would try and get some another way. (do you know what I mean?) God it's the same thing over here, exept the price, but the pharmacy often doesn't have any in stock and I have to wait for a week feeling like total sh*t (I'm dependent on my adderall) when I should be kicking Math tests asses.

I would have waited the week, except I'm almost out of my XR trial and want to be able to go right into the new stuff (being prone to migraines, I figure it's a better option than abruptly doing without and starting up again all abruptly). And it's almost time to move 4 hours away back to school; I see my doc one more time, next week, and we do need to get at least a few days of IR in to get even some idea of how I react and whether it needs adjusting/changing.
We don't have Rite Aid here, just Walgreens and local grocery chains' pharmacies, plus some independents. I considered taking it elsewhere but all Walgreens will be the same (they have a computerized linked system) and I wasn't in the mood for the hassle of driving around, especially when it was almost closing time for most of them anyway. *sigh* I'll just call Walgreens and tell them to call it into one of the hospital's pharmacies.

No sh*t--you must live in California. They never have it on time/in stock even w/a month's notice & why should you have to switch pharmacies every thirty days? I mean isn't Northern California where the group Ritalin Kids are from?

Usually the problem is related to what an insurance company will cover and what relationships they have with pharmacy chains. For instance, my insurance will not pay for a 3-month mail-order prescription from my local Kroger pharmacy. However, they will if it's from their "preferred" mail-order pharmacy.
Call your health insurance company and find out what they will cover, and find out which pharmacies they are affiliated with.
