i'm putting this on the school board and the parents board, because some of us don't look on them all the time.
any way, the advice is try to have the iep written so that your child can have extra school books. We have ours set up so that he gets an extra book so we don't have to worry about him forgetting to bring it home. I just asked for it last year in the class room, and the teacher was more than happy to give us an extra one. But, this year I mentioned it in the ard meeting. When we had the meeting at the school, i asked for the extra book, well that backfired to the school. They were short on books this year. So, i waited until the other parents left and asked her for an extra to take home and reminded her about how i requested it in the meeting for this years iep. I got the book. Come to find out, there is a law (i'm not sure if it is a state law or a federal law). If you request an extra book or extra books, they should give you one. Just thought you all might benefit from this info.
I'm not sure what you mean by extra books? Can you please explain to me. thanks for the idea! i will ask for the books when we go to our open house next week. That is a good plan and what they mean by extra books is two sets of school books one at home and one at school. As for adding it to the IEP better get started for they have 30 days to respond once you put the request into writing and another 30 to have the meeting and have the plan started. My son actually did not have any text books in 1st grade...he had reading books but they were childrens literature No Math book, no SS or science book either....I hope this changes...is this the Norm for primary grades or is our school system just weird?yes, but you can probably just ask the teachers for the books to keep at home and they will do it. Most teachers will do it if they know that you are making the extra effort to get home work done and to keep their grades up.
My son has a iep and just started 1st grade this past wednesday. I
think I recall his teacher telling him that he has school books in his
desk. So I'll have to check into having 2 sets of books. Thank-you for
the great information!
I want books for home or a copy of the assignment. I wish they had to read stuff 2 times before testing. It was that way at a school were at before. In the school our son is at now. They also have this... 3 ring binder with behavior chart,a 2 sided folder 1 for hw,other side class work,spiral-parent teacher communication log/ The school does this for all the kids in elementry. Loven it!
How wonderful, Lillian that your PTA thought to buy those books.
I asked last yr for an extra text book last yr and was told the same as Ogram, No extra text books. I'll ask again this yr and if I'm told the same thing, I'll ask for them to copy the the material their working on. He does on occasion forget his books for homework but also he needs review of the material. If they read aloud in class the chapter their working on, he really needs to reread it to get the info out of it.
Maybe if I can get the material in advance he can go over it and be better prepared for whats coming.......hmmmm!
Great info, Ogram!
I was pleasantly surprised this year to find out that my son's PTA purchased a classroom set of each textbook, so the texts the kids were issued could come home and stay home. When the kids are at school, they use the classroom texts. No carrying books around, no getting books out of lockers, no forgetting books at school, and no forgetting books at home. Wow! What a great way for the PTA to spend its money.
Wow Lillian........now that's a progressive PTA!!
Okiemom
Our local library has a copy of all the books used in all the schools - we've ended up doing homework at the library a couple of times.
