High Dose Concerta | ADHD Information
i only respond to high doses. Sorry if this doesnt relate to the whole topic. i
only read the first few sentences.Has anyone experienced high blood pressure readings on the stimulants? My son is on concerta and last summer he had a elevated reading. I just bought a blood pressure monitor so we can keep an eye on it as he wants to play sports this year.My son has been on everything possible (so it seems). He is nine and started on meds at 6. Every time we try something it works for a while and then doesn't seem to work anymore. Currently he is taking 80mg of Ritalin LA in the morning and another 80mg at noon. This too doesn't seem to be working very well anymore. He also has a major problem with insomnia. Then when he can't sleep all he does is eat, and not just a midnight snack, he binges. Don't know what to do anymore. Mornings are miserable, he is completely out of control. Please help!!!!!!LOL! Thats nothing. My psyc put me back on concerta and im at over 170
mgI also metabolize meds fairly quickly. I take adderall because the methylphenidate-based meds were not strong enough (adderall is roughly twice as potent as methylphenidate). However, I don't like the thought of taking meds really, especially at high doses, so I take a "low dose" (90mg) just to take the edge off of my symptoms.oh wow, I take 72MG of Concerta and I thought that was a lot.
Hi. I'd like to start a thread to talk with other people who either themselves or their children respond only to high doses due to metabolism issues. We all know people respond differently to medication and/or different doses. Those of us who take, or whose children take, high doses often feel "doubly" different because the lower doses just do nothing for us.
Here is our situation. My son is 13. DX'd with an auditory processing disorder at 5, anxiety disorder at 8. Always suspected ADHD Inattentive but not officially dx'd until age 10 in 5th grade, when we started our first stimulant trials. We tried multiple meds with various doses. Nothing seemed to work decently until out of frustration, we finally turned over my son's medication management to a board certified child/adolescent psychiatrist. He started trying more aggressive combinations of various stimulants with Zoloft and Tenex. Things started clicking finally.
We now are on 162 mg of Concerta and are seeing good results. I've met one other person whose son takes a higher dose.....218 mg. Our psychiatrist states that undermedicating is just as big a problem as over medicating. Of course, it's so hard to realize what type of dose is "under" because everyone responds so differently. For my son.....puberty really threw things out of whack also and affected the medication metabolism. I'd like to add that we use the multi-modal approach to treating my son's ADHD.....both meds, therapy, educational support and IEP, plus Omega 3 supplements.
And to think I was one of the parents who held out as long as we could even trying ANY stimulant medications! (Which is hindsight really hurt my son and his self-esteem) Any others out there on high doses and finding success?

HA, so did I.
Some medications metabolize at a slower rate than others. A great medication is adderall XR. Half of the medication dissolves immediately, and the other half is made with some chemical that the body takes longer to metabolize, usually four hours or so. Anyway, the point is that this way, the adderall is distributed to the body throughout the whole day, rather than just metabolizing it in the stomach and giving only a few hours of performance.
