School Anxiety | ADHD Information

Is he on new meds? My daughter complains about upset stomach sometimes when her XR meds release. You can tell it does it at certain times of the day.

He is not on meds right now.  We have had such a hard time with them.  Most seem to give him severe headaches, others don't seem to do much good.

HHMM. Maybe there is something going on with him. Maybe it is a self esteem issue. My daughter has very low self esteem. Since before she was diagnosed, she knew she was different. Always getting into trouble, kids making fun of her because she couldn't stop talking or sit still. She would make comments to me like, "nobody likes me, and they pick on me".

Yours is a bit older though, so maybe he is not as open to discuss these things with you. Maybe try to sit down with him and ask if something is going on.

Good luck and God Bless.

Hi I have a 11 year old son who has ADHD and he is very anxious about starting the 6th grade.  It's hard to know though with him if he is reacting on hormones or if is insecurities of no one liking him - and having a hard time keeping friends - most of his friends are girls - the boy competition thing is too much for him.  Last year we had a few good fights about him not wanting to go to school, knowing that there was nothing "wrong" with him health wise.  I did make him go but was in constant contact with his teacher.

My son is 12 and was diagnosed several years ago with ADHD.  For the last 3 years or so, he has complained of being physically ill on school mornings.  I took him to our family dr last year because I thought something was seriously wrong with him like cancer or something.  They assured me everything was fine.  But, true to the past, today (the fifth day of school) he woke up telling me his stomach hurt too badly to go to school.

Is anyone else having or has had this problem?

Perhaps this is a red flag to alert you to him having social problems at school.  Maybe he is being bullied or harassed.  Maybe have a talk with his teacher(s) to try to find out what is going on.

I agree about the posibility of anxiety. In the 5th grade I threw up everyday after lunch and would be sent to the nurses office for an hour. This was the first year I found out that not all teachers were wonderful. My 10yo gets teased because she prefers to wear her old clothes and she has "interesting' teeth. She will never admit to being teased but her friends and teacher have told me about this. She shows her anxiety by refusing to go to school. and getting more defiant.

Does he have any accomodations at school that may be embarassing him now that he is older? What kind of doctor does your son see for the ADHD and what has been done so far? Is she under the care of a psychiatrist or psychologist that can be consulted? You have a lot to look at. Good luck with this.
