problem afternoons | ADHD Information

What time are you puting the patch on in the morning? Is it posible that it is wearing off too early or not a high enough dose? Things to discuss with her doctor. Keep us posted. My 9 year old has been on the 10 mg Daytrana patch for a week now. This is her first try with medication of any kind. For the first few days, things were good. We saw some promising stuff like a much higher frustration level, less intensity in terms of  figeting/fighting with siblings etc. But for the last four days she's had tough afternoons. Something will set her off and then she's sullen/grumpy for a couple of hours. It's entirely possible that her mood is caused by the fact we've had busy days and because school is starting again and she's overloaded and tired and stressed. But it's kind of wierd that, at least for the last four days, she emotionally "crashes" around 4 and stays that way until 6 or 7ish. I'm wondering if it's possible that it has to do with the meds. (Just for reference, we take off the patch at 5. Appetite seems normal. At bit of trouble falling asleep and a comlaint about a headache but no other side effects.) I'm going to talk to the doc tomorrow but I was just wondering if anyone has experienced something similar.

Thanks for any and all help.

Since she's new to stimulant therapy she may be having an emotional reaction when the medicine wears off. Even though the patch is still on, the efficacy rate is often different for many.

Her body needs more time to adjust. All of a sudden she is receiving medicine to help her cognitive functions perform better and then the help goes away in the afternoon. Her system has not had time to adapt to these changes and a result is grumpiness and irratibility. I doubt that school starting is the reason.

Her system should adapt in a few weeks, if not earlier. In the meantime you could try having her practice some relaxation techniques for a few minutes when these issues start. It may help her subconcious better manage the medicine wearing off.

Best of luck to you.

Sounds like a crash rebound effect.
