The August 2006 issue of the CHADD journal Attention had an article that discussed various alternative and complementary treatments for ADHD.  Limiting Sugar was listed as an ineffective treatment for adhd.  The author examined 20 controlled studies that limited the amounts of sugar that participants ate.  All but one ( of the studies) failed to show significance.

You may want to ask your doctor what exactly he wants you to watch in your childs diet.

Not all kids are sensitive to sugar and it's only if you have an intolerance to it that it causes a negative reaction. Studies often overlook this.
There is also a book called the ADD Nutrition Solution by Marcia Zimmerman.
I keep meaning to buy this book .. and always forget (ADDer). Thanks for the reminder.

The CHADD article also identifies one of the treatments with"some evidence" ( not necessarily conclusive) for helping ADHD was Elimination Diets and stated that  a small sub group of children may be sensitive to certain chemicals in foods.

This is a really good article over all and I suggest you read it if you get a chance.  I If you are not a member of CHADD this journal is typically in a doctor's office.

Getting kids to eat high protein/ low sugar diets is hard but not impossible.

One of my kids favorites is fruit smoothies in the morning before school.  I use soymilk (DD's lactose intollerant), ice, whatever fresh fruit is in the house and a scoop of soy protien powder.  They chug it down like it's going out of style.

Nature's Own makes high fiber whole grain bread that is either reduced or no sugar and it tastes good too.

We go through a lot of peanut butter- we put it on everything- apples, graham crackers, whole grain toast and bagels, sometimes he even dips the nuts from his trail mix in it

Just watch out for sugar free candy.  I found out the hard way.  Bought a bag of sugar free gummy bears for the kids, had a bad day and ended up eat the whole bag myself.  I didn't read the fine print on the back.  Artificial sweeteners can cause severe gastrointestinal distress.

Alternative sweetner is all you can use if their is a corn allergie though. They work fine for our son.

joemom38961.6661689815do a websearch for Feingold Diet or ADD diet..... you might also check out the Alternative and Complimentary MEds secion of this board.....my son has adhd and he is on three different medications his doctor says to watch what he eatsbut everything has sugar. can somebody give me any advice.

Diet stuff it avoids corn syrup. Daniel has to do cause of the corn allergie he has. HE ALSO HAS TO AVOID YEAST.

My son's doctor recommended high protein/low carb diet.

Making sure fruits and protein are served together. Making sure we use wheat products vs. other products.  Barilla makes wheat noodles (all kinds) that offer omega.  We try to avoid sodas (I should say my son does better than me . He is constantly reminding me I drink too many. He is right. He is only 4 1/2.)

We make sure he has breakfast, morning snack, lunch, after snack, dinner, evening snack.

I swear this is working for him.  He (knock on wood) is doing awesome with diet change and low med dosage. I'm not seeing a weight increase nor a weight reduction.  He is doing quite well.  We're just trying to eat healthier.

There is also a book called the ADD Nutrition Solution by Marcia Zimmerman.  I'm currently reading it and it has a lot of information in it that is a bit overwhelming.  It talks a lot about giving your children supplements like omegas and b vitamins.  We haven't started the diet yet but as soon as I finish the book we're going to get started.  A lot of it says to avoid dairy and high sugar foods.I also did a diet change with my son, but one of the problems that I had is he didn't want to eat on the medication, and he lost so much weight. So I found alternatives to what he likes to eat. He loves french toast, and waffles for breakfast, but syrup has alot of sugar, so I buy sugar free, I am actually finding that I like it better myself. So I watch his sugars, and he eats all the fruits and veges. that he wants.
