afternoon boosters | ADHD Information

I am new to this sight.  I almost cried when I saw in black and white that our family is not alone.  My six year old son was diagnosed with adhd with impulse disorder when he was five.  We like many have already tried other meds, the best results have been from Metadate.  The problem is that we give it to him at 7:am with great results, but the affects ware off by noon.  He has only been in 1st grade for 3 day's and we have already been contacted by the school twice. He is spinning, talking, tipping and chewing, throwing himself and chewing on his clothes.   I talked to his Dr. at his six month med check about a booster, but she was pretty adament about not giving him one at this age.  Does anyone have any ideas about how to calm the afternoon crazies long enough to get through the rest of the day?

Welcome.  What do you mean by spinning and tipping?  Has your son ever been evaluated for high-functioning autism?

Is your son on Metadate or Metadate CD?

Metadate CD.  Autism was one of the first things I thought back when he was 4.  I had read much as i could about the subject.  His psychiatrist, who was recomended by many as "the guy" in our area acted like I was crazy when I brought it up.  My son just cannot maintain.    He flinches his hands,  spins in circles, tips his chair. He just has to be in constant motion.    He is a very smart little guy.  He is very sweet and funny not angry or an introvert.  He is very social and gets his feelings hurt when he drives other kids his age away.

Honestly, psychiatrists aren't the best at diagnosing autism (they are great at diagnosing mood issues like anxiety and depression).  I'd recommend an evaluation with a neuropsychologist, who can assess for many childhood disorders, including but not limited to ADHD.  Neuropsychs are found at children's and university hospitals.Good luck! Docs can be like that sometimes.Thank you all, you have armed me with a little more confidence and questions when talking to the the dr.  Sometimes I just feel like I have no control over his treatment.  [QUOTE=irish]

Your son sounds quite a bit like mine.  I took him to a neuropsychologist who found he has high probility for Aspergers (high functioning Autism), but his ADHD skewed the test results, so they are inconclusive.  I'm not trying to say your child is autistic, but it's worth researching.

While guidelines like not giving a noon-time booster at his age are important, they are only guides.  If the probs are always in the pm, then tell your doc you want to try a booster anyway.  Be firm and if she won't budge, make her explain why and ask her for another alternative.  Don't let her just say no and send you away.  I've just started my ds on the daytrana patch and we're having good results.  Ds says he can feel a difference and is more focused in the pm.  Think about something like that or a long-acting med like Concerta, Ritalin LA or Adderal XR.   Is the meds your son is on only a 4 hour med?  There are the extended release ones like Ritalin LA or Concerta which last about 7-8 hours roughly t hose are what my daughter was on.  She is starting a research study soon so she is off all meds.Try Conserta. I only have to take that twice a day. and i need to take other
ADHD meds 3 to 4 times per day so Concerta should work well, but i dont
know fo rsure.
