I have a 16 year old son who has been taking some form of stimulant since he was first diagnosed at age 6. Now that he is a teenager he seems to be a bit sexually preoccupied, books, magazines, videos, etc. I think he is a bit too preoccupied as the punishments for bringing this stuff into the house does not stop him...he just continues to bring stuff in. He knows that its against the house rules but he continues.
I have asked his dr if the stimulant could be contributing to his "preoccupation" but she says no. But if you read any of the parent anti-drug literature they tell you that stimulants ( like cocaine) contribute to hightened sexuality. I just wonder if the ritalin could be doing the same or is this NORMALLLL?????
I cannot really address what is normal for a male teen.
There is a huge difference between drug abuse and medical use. Proper treatment of ADHD reduces the odd of sexually transmitted disease and pregnancy for people with ADHD, most likely due to reducing impulsiveness.
I don't know what is "normal" for a teenage male, but if you think his preoccupation is greater than those of his peers (can you ask the moms of his friends?), I would guess it could be hypersexuality associated with bipolar disorder. And yes, stimulants can make bipolar disorder worse.I think that that may just be teen boys in general.
