school anxiety....anyone else? | ADHD Information
Obviously something had bothered the poor kid and too bad you could not get him to talk so you can help him work it out. Did you ask him why he is upset about school? Good luck.Hi, my son did the same thing. I use to feel so bad for him. But they do get over it the older they get. He gets a little nervous now, but who doesn't get the jitters the first day or week of school. You just have to be strong and push him out there. I actually use to volunteer to but I had my daughter and I don't have a babysitter. I use to like going it was a lot fun but then when it was time for me to go he would start crying and wanted to go home with me. Some times I would break down and let him but other times he would still have a couple of hrs left of school and so I wouldn't take him which was hard, they learn to get over it. Good Luck :0)my daughter is going into 4th grade & still gives me a hard time w/going to school.....she's gotten better....i reward her at the end of each week w/a video game rental----if she's good in the mornings...thank you everyone for your thoughtfullness. to jillette, i have asked and this morning he said he didnt want to ride the bus. I really cant get anything else from him. he actually wont come out and say he doesnt want to go, he just says he has a headache and he might get a fever so he might have to come home! i hope he will get over it, thanks everyone. Just keep encouraging him. Try talking to him about his feelings and see if you can role play some ideas of how he can manage these feelings he's having. Talk with his teacher and see if she can offer him a little extra support .. in the sense that if he's needing a time-out, to provide him space somewhere in the class/school for him to recoop. He'll get over it as he did in K. As for the slight fever, I think that was just coincidental and nothing to do with his anxieties .. then again, I'm not a doctor.hi, my son is 6 years old and started 1st grade last week. he had some probs in kindergarten in the begininng of the year, such as he didnt want to go, but got over it. he now crys at night and in the morning and says his stomach hurts. he says nothing at school makes him upset, but he just doesnt want to go. he doesnt want me to work days either. i used to work nights and was able to volunteer alot last year and can only volunteer on friday afternoons now. he just wants me available at all times. he actually came home early last week with a "slight fever". anyone with similar experience? any advice on how to calm him? thank youhi my 6yr old starts back at school next week...and the questions have been going for about ten days now....we are on the "how many sleeps" countdown...four more to go!!...lol
my son has asked a lot of questionsabout his first day in his new class and those that i can answer i have but those i can't answer i have said that we will find out together when we get there next week and that seems to have reassured him.
i don't really get too many problems at home before school as he loves to go .....it is just when it is time for him to go into class that i get the clingyness but again the same as most of you have discussed i use BRIBES!!!!
they work most times ...lol
We have had this same problem this week. We took him to the doctor thinking that his meds may be hurting his stomache. Talked to the doctor and realized that this (crying and stomache aches) only happen before school and before football practice. (only when he doesn't want to go!) He said that if it were the meds it would happen all the time, and that really this is normal for all 6-year olds, not just with ADHD. He told us to try to push through and maybe try a bribe. We told him if he could go to school without crying for 5 days he would get a treat. This morning, no problems.
Also, when I would pick him up from school, he would tell me he had a great day and how much fun he had. I think they can get anxious or nervous before school.
Hope this helps!
