Adderall XR & bruising | ADHD Information

What other  meds is your son taking for the bipolar? Some of the meds decrease platelets which can lead to buising. My 9 year old daughter has taken it for 21/2 years, and I don't notice that she bruises any easier than she did before she started taking it.  However, I began taking it about 4 months ago, and I notice that I have a lot of bruises recently.  It seems that it does not matter what I have been doing, there are new bruises.  I had not really associated it with the Adderall until now.

Hey my son is 8 years old and is adhd/bipolar.  He is currently taking adderall xr 15 mg. I was just wondering if anyone else has had problems with easy bruising while taking this medication.  He has bruises all over his body.  If anyone else has had this problem I would appreciate your reply.  Thank you

My son was on 30 mg. Adderall XR when we stopped it this past summer.  He had tics, weight loss (that he couldn't afford), and lots of bruising.  He is 13, and plays soccer, but never bruised to the point of parents asking about it and other kids making jokes about his arms and legs covered in bruises.

We finally discontinued it and went to Strattera, which had too many side effects, and are now on Focalin XR with our fingers crossed.

Good luck with your son....I miss the Adderall XR, but not the side effects that he hated.

Quick! Go to a doctor and ask for a complete blood count. Tell about your bruising and ask to get your blood checked for enough red and white bloodcells and platelets. Your life could depend on it.

Thank you so much Steven D and LRM216 for your concern and advice.....he is now off of the Adderall XR - didn't need blood work to see that this was dangerous for him!  Hoping that the Focalin XR will do better for him!

You are very welcome!  That's what we are all here for - to help each other as we all journey down this tunnel of hell with our most precious children and loved ones.  Glad he's off the Adderall.  Good luck with the Focalin XR - this might just be the one for him!  Keep us posted.  We care.Please make sure the doctor is informed and have a blood test done.  My healthy grand-daughter had to be taken off Stratera after 3 months as she bruised so bad, we were afraid people were going to think she was being beaten!  Also, when we had her blood tested, her clotting factor was extremely low.  Doctors (pedi and psych) both felt it best to take her off Stratera IMMEDIATELY.  Bruising disappeard and blood clotting returned to normal within 6 weeks.  She is now on Metadate CD and no side effects such as those on Stratera.  I realize your child is taking Adderall, but one never knows - each person reacts so differently to each med.  PLEASE have him checked.  Good luckThank you all for your reply's my son has also been taken off the Adderall and he is now taking Concerta 18mg.  Today was his very first day on it, dont know how it's gonna do yet but hopefully he want have all the problems he's had while on the Adderall.   Thank you all so much your reply's help alot.
