The first few weeks of school is tough for schools, and it sounds like this school is having a particularly difficult time getting it together. They are short a couple of vital people in SPED--a resource teacher and a speech teacher. I'm glad they got a new speech teacher this time of year because it's often hard to find one. Are they going to replace the resource teacher with a full-time SPED substitute? Also, very hard to find. The other SPED teacher may be working with the kids who are in life skills or resource full time. I suggest calling the school and finding out what is going on. What plans does the school have for the SPED teacher on maternity leave? Who will be replacing her? When is this going to happen? As far as the IEP, a lot of teachers don't get these until the end of the first or second week. I wish that wasn't the case, but it is. Still, your husband has met with the teacher, so there isn't much excuse for her not giving modified tests, as specified in the IEP. I would make copies of the tests, write a note to the teacher, and see what happens. If the teacher still does not abide by the IEP, then you need to talk to the principal. If the teacher still does not abide, then you need to call the director of SPED for the district and complain.
Let us know what happens!
I would have your child re-write those two tests in a modified version. If it's in her IEP it's only fair she's graded according to what the initial plan was. Best of luck.I posted this on the schools issues board, thought someone over here might have some input....
School started August 15 here. Things are going pretty smoothly so far. Except for dd has no special ed teacher helping her 2x/day because the teacher has been out due to pregnancy complications. There is another special ed teacher at the school, also. Also, she hasn't been getting speech because they hadn't hired the speech teacher yet. They just now hired one. And the teacher hasn't been giving dd a modified spelling test as specified in the IEP. She has had 2 tests so far. DH also had a meeting one-on-one with her teacher the 2nd week of school going over the IEP, so she is aware of it. WTF? I mentioned this to the psychologist we are working with on parental issues and she seemed concerned, enough to say she was calling her teacher next week. Is this what it takes? Someone with a PhD?
Hello again. Just to update you: dd still hasn't received any speech therapy, even though the speech teacher has been there for at least 3 weeks. I fired off an email to the whole bunch of 'em, the principal, SE teacher, regular teacher, counselor. Everyone except the speech teacher because her email addy wasn't on the school website! Anyway, I got a response from the SE teacher that she will start speech TOMORROW. What the heck is this?
I also asked the question of who is the coordinator of services there. I got a very wishy-washy answer. I'll just cut and paste it for you:
As for who
coordinates her services, that would be anyone who works with her on a
daily/weekly basis.
OK, I need some help here. What do I do? This just doesn't seem right. No wonder dd isn't getting her services. No one is responsible!
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
bumpIn our school system there is School Support and Compliance person. This is a resource teacher who is in charge of making sure that the promised services are delivered. This person is basicly the boss of the people at your school and probably the best person to contact at this point. A friend of mine who is a special education teacher had recommended I contact the compliance teacher when I was getting the run around from our school about setting up a team meeting. I had my meeting scheduled 24 hours later.
Good luck and keep us posted.
Well, we don't seem to have a Compliance person. After firing off another email to the principal, he proposed getting the speech therapist to make up the time lost. I like that idea. Hopefully, it won't be a red-tape big deal to make it happen.
I just hope I haven't alienated anyone at the school. The SE teacher and the speech therapist are new and I haven't met them yet. They only know me by these emails, so I tried to write them in the most respectful and appreciative way possible.
