"VERY" Important Question About Daytrana | ADHD Information

Share

Ok everyone. My son started the Patch on Wednesday Aug 30. The first day he was on it the teacher said she noticed a difference in him. He's actually sitting in a group circle for story time, he's doing work in the class just like all the other kids and even has learned to write and spell several words. The only problem i'm having with this patch is that in the afternoons when he get's home and we take the patch off he changes. He goes wild. He get's mean. I was wondering if anyone is haveing this problem ? I'm tempted tot ake him off the patch if this keeps up. He's jumping on my 3 year old. Pinching, biting and kicking her. Any advice please..... He goes back to the Dr this Friday (Sept 8) Should I ask about haveing him put on something more then just the 10 mg he's on now???? I really like the patch and I like how convient it is to put it on while he's still asleep and he doesn't bother it and I like how well he's doing in school, but I cant let him do my 3 year that way either. Please Please anyone Please give me some advice, tips or anything that will help me with this.

Bradsmom, when does this happen?  Daytrana takes two hours to kick in and two hours to get out of the bloodstream, according to the package insert.  Does this happen right after you take off the patch or a couple hours later when it's going out of the bloodstream?  I'd try cutting the patch in half and see what happens, you may want to wait till a Saturday or some day you can observe him all day, however.  Good luck.

thanks guy's for helping me out with this. Rebound is exactly what it sound's like. has anyone else had this problem with the patch or other meds? I checked out a website on here that said the patchs lowest MG is 10. So i'm gonna talk to his Dr to see if cutting it in half would be a possibility also.

What was he on before the patch?  And did you not have these problems before, but now you do?  How old is he? We went form Focalin xr 20mg in am and 10 in pm to a 20 mg patch around the 1st of aug.  It worked wonderfully!!  Lasted all day!!  He got nothing but praise from his teachers.  BUT, it bothered his skin too much and we are backto pills  We will be trying Adderall 10 mg this Friday.  I have my fingers crossed but I know nothing else will be as good as the patch.    I'm surprised you not have the same wonderful reaction to the patch as me and alot of other poster have.  But i guess every child is different.  Are you sure its not just a one time action against your 3 yr old and something that would pass. It sounds to me like "rebound," which is when the med levels in the bloodstream begin to drop.  In some people it's a gradual drop, in others it's fast and often produces this mood change.  Often, people will back off on the dosage, ie go from 10mg to 5mg.  I think the patch comes in 5 mg and you may want to ask your doctor about it.  I think the package insert says that you're not supposed to cut the patch in half, but I've also heard that it's been done and no one has seen any negative side effects, other than a lack of meds.

I think it is imperative that you contact his doctor and let him/her know about this as well as keep an eye out like a hawk for altercations between your ds and your toddler.
Like susieb said, talk to the doctor it sounds like rebound. You might need a very low booster dose of methylphenidate to ease the come down. There are other options as well that the doctor might suggest for your son's specific needs. Getting good results in school is a very positive start. Now you need to fine tune it.

susieb,

thats exactly how it is. it only happens when i take the patch off. as far as the teacher's, everyone at school has said he's doing so much better at school sinse he's been on the patch. I will look into it and see if the patch comes in 5mg. if it does then that might be what will have to happen. Before he was on strattera but he couldn't take it b/c he can't swallow a pill.
