Diet Suggestion for ADHD child | ADHD Information

Hello  with my son I have chosen not to medicate yet since he's still only 5 and I want him to reach his full potential on his own without meds that may be why her mother feels the way she does.  Everyone opinion on meds differs I've spoken to people who feel their lives were saved with meds and others who didn't like the side effects from meds.  I work in the medical field with psychiatric patients and I have seen many children who come in where I am who are on a laundry list of medications and almost always I see ADHD drugs so you can understand my fear.

Anyway recently I have just cut the garbage from his diet.  No special diet no particular plan to follow just common sense.  No doughnuts for breakfast is one example...if we are running late for school in the past I'd throw a doughnut his way and call it breakfast or allow him ice pops, slurpee's from 7-11, or fruitsnacks for treats.  I stopped all that.  I read labels and check for intense amount of sugars and additives and don't buy it.  For breakfast if I'm rushing he gets dry cheerios (he hates milk in his cereal) and a banana I buy organic 100% fruitjuice with no added sugar, I make his sandwitches on whole wheat bread.  These are just some examples.  I raised the protein and avoid unnessesary sugar...it's not perfect and he does get some sugars but not overloaded like he was before and I see a HUGE difference, he's calmer and alot less distracted his impulses are still there but not like before.  In a nutshell just use common sense to start get her used to eating more high protein foods and less sugar filled foods.

Also when my son got upset at me for not allowing a certain treat I was honest with him I explained that when he gets into trouble he doesn't like it and I found without sugar he behaves better and it makes him feel better for not getting into constant trouble and makes me happier to see him do so well.  WELL my mother later asked him if he wanted fruit snacks (you know the junky packaged stuff) and he said to her "Mommy said I can't have sugar because it makes me misbehave so no thankyou" I was so proud of him !!!! It's amazing how much these kids like to have the opportunity to control their own behaviors he is pleased with himself for doing better and therefore avoids the stuff he knows will bring out the worst in him

Hello

I believe my child has ADHD but her mother refuses to put her on drugs so I've been trying alternative options (Attentivechild wafers) and I was wondering if someone could post a link on where i could find breakfast and dinner options on what I could feed my child that is low in sugar but still good enough for her to eat. I would love to have a weekly menu that  gives me options on foods that I could giver her that are low in sugar but still giving her foods that she will enjoy.

Also I seen other diet emails I'm looking for a specific Weekly Menu that I could follow.

She is starting back to school and I'm praying we do not have to go through the mess we did last year and I'm hoping if I give her better breakfast options that do not have sugar as well as pack good lunches it would calm her down more.

Please help me..

At costco they were having a demonstration on this blender called a vitamix and my kids were tasting the smoothies, soups, veggie juice they were making and loved them.  So I spent 0 on this blender but I tell you, this is no ordinary blender.  It has such power that we throw everything in there, fruit, veggies and my kids drink it!  They love making their own smoothies.  Our regular blender sat in the cabinet but this is used every day!

I'm sure you can find it on the web.
