NEED HELP !!! | ADHD Information

To both who answered, thank you!

The place the diagnosed her was called the Children's Center and it is specifically geared towards children under 7 yrs. old with emotional or phyciatric problems.

I have not brought her back to our pediatrician because I do not feel like most pediatricians have enough knowledge. I want someone who specifically deals with this. I am looking for someone as we speak.

rheron, we go to a child neurologist and she is great with ADHD and meds.

Hi, my name is Becky, I am new to the forum.

I have a 6 yr.old daughter diagnosed with ADHD since she was 3 yrs. old. She has been on Adderall XR and is now taking a 15mg dose once a day.

I had a meeting with her teacher at the beginning of the school year. The day I went in had not been a good day.

The day before, the teacher stepped out of the room. She caught a few kids running around when she got back and my daughter was one of them. She warned them all if it happened again, they would miss a recess.

The next day, the day I met with her, it happened again and she made my daughter and 4 other kids miss recess. My daughter became very angry, began saying how angry she was, stomping her feet, making growling noises and this went on for a few minutes.

My daughter calmed down and the teacher praised her and allowed her to go to the bathroom. My daughter didn't come back, the teacher found her out in the hall hiding under a table.

Apparently, this has happened a few times now. My daughter is disruptive, all over the place, making animals noises and now I must personally walk her to class because she wasn't coming in when the bell rang.

The teacher said she had already asked about getting paperwork and testing started (which floored me, but I thank the lord for!) and looking into an IEP or 504.

There is supposed to be a meeting on monday with the principal, the school councilour and some resource teachers. They will discuss what to do with my daughter. I am going to try and meet with the principal before this meeting.

What I need help with is I do not know what to ask for. On one hand, I know my daughter needs to be disaplined for her behaviour, but I read once that it is bad to take recesses away from ADHD kids because they need that playtime. My daughter is also having trouble learning to read.

We also have issues at home. When my daughter is told no, she will strike out, hitting and yelling, calling people names. I will not lie, in the past we have used spanking as disapline, but have since learned it does no good, why do it when it hurts and it does no good?

I am looking into therapy for us, but trying to find some place that we can reasonably afford is looking like a problem. Although, in the long run, I guess we will suck it up, it is our daughter's well being we are concerned about after all.

All help and suggestions appreciated!

Sounds like the adderall is not working.  When do you see the doctor next?  It took us a while to get the meds correct for my son.

I am glad the school is ready to work with you...the first step it to provide some interventions that could help your daughter control her behavior.  If these interventions fail then the next step would be evaluation for SPEd and the famous IEP.

perhaps a good behavior mod plan is all she needs.

good luck and let us know what happens

I have to ask: Who diagnosed your daughter? Are you certain, in your mind, that ADHD is all that is going on? Did she have any speech delays or other quirky, strange behaviors? Anything in the family tree--mood disorders, substance abuse, or neurological problems? Sounds like she may need another evaluation. She could have other things that mimic ADHD, especially with the growling and the hiding. How does she transition? Ever think of taking her to see a Neuropsych? Have the meds made a big difference in behavior? Anyways, I do hope you find out what's going on. I don't feel you've nailed it yet. Good luck.
