Medication change due to sleep problems? | ADHD Information

my son was also on concerta and we kept switching his meds.  This did no good finally my son was put on seroquel with dexedrine and he started sleeping really good.  These meds eventually stopped working on him and now he is on remeron 7.5 mgs a night and he sleeps wonderful now.   my son has allways had problems sleeping now at the age of 15yrs i was hopping that he would understand the need for sleep,we tried simple meds which only would work for one night, but as any of you now having a young child struggling to sleep for so long one night wasnt good enough, not long before my son turned 10 his doctor we used to see then was very good, gave me a prescription for risperidone(risperdol) he was allowed this once a day at about 6.30pm and for a month, we had to keep everyone quiet so he would let the med work and didnt it work i thought it was a wonder drug, sleep no tantrums no paranoia , but we had to go back to the doc who told me my son wouldnt be able to keep taking this med like that because of some of the side effects, so now we only get a small quantity so we can use it if and when needed, i tend to use it about 4 times a month at the most just to take the edge off,  he normally wakes in good time after a good nights sleep but if he doesnt take this med i have to keep checking on him he will even sneak out of his room and go into our room and watch tv so we cant hear him, hes been up as late as 4 in the morning, this is while hes been on ritilin and concerta,

Hello!  I was wondering if any of you out there have switched your child's meds due to problems with sleeping.  My son has always had problems sleeping, even before meds, but now it is horrible.  He is taking Concerta 36 mg. and last night when I last checked on him at 12:30 he was still awake (he went down at 8:45).  I don't know what time he finally fell asleep, but he was awake again at 5:00 a.m.  His Dr. prescribed Trazodone 50 mg. and told us to try half a tablet first.  It didn't help at all.  The full tablet helps some but I hate to medicate him every night!  We have also tried Melatonin with no success.

I was just wondering if any of you have had this problem with Concerta and if any of you have switched to a different medication and had better luck with the sleep issues?  My son has also been on Adderall but we didn't see as good of results as we do with Concerta.

As always.....thanks so much for your help and insight!  Stacey

My daughter is always hard to get to sleep and is currently off meds but last year she was on concerta.  When she was on concerta she did not suffer later nights which definetly proves all kids are different.  I am sorry I am of no help.  Check with your doctor.

My son is on Concerta 18mg and also has difficulty sleeping at times.  We talked to his doctor and he said to give him his meds as early in the morning as possible. Some days are better than others.  As of this time, we have no desire to switch meds, b/c of the great results we have had with Concerta.

Good Luck

my son is allso on concerta and ritalin,he was on ritalin alone to begin with but this had little or no affect on him so his drs tried him on 18mg of concerta along side his ritalin...this worked for a short time bt then like all his other meds wore off pretty quickly...so his drs decided they would put him on 36mg of concerta alongside his ritalin but this wiped him out completly...he could hardly move for 2 days and he was like a zombie...he is now back on 18mg of concerta and 10 mg of ritalin  alongside primtherzine 25mg a night to help him sleep....this has allso started to wear off....i am torn as to wether to take him off his night time meds alltogether because the poor kid is constantly depressed...he has no appetite he cant sleep...he has ben on meds for about 4 years now and he is 11 ...i would just love it if he could get  a decent nights sleep and have a normal appetite....its like being between a rock and a hard place..you have a hellish time with these kids when they are not taking medication but when you start medicating them it gets even worse for them i think its hard as a parent to know sometimes what to do for the best
