I know when I took melatonin at night if I do not get enough sleep, I have a hangover effect.  I do not know if that would happen with someone so young.does anyone giver ther preschooler melatonin during the  day to help encourage nap  time....hes 4  adhd/oddand is so tired but cannot focus on laying down to nap or try to  wind down ..i give it to him at  night but is the  daytime  thing good  also or can it help him calm down enough to  get a short nap in ..hes naping at home  just  not in preschool...any one with  suggestions  please reply back asap...

no it doesnt get the  same effect....he wakes up bright eyed and refreshed

I would be careful and talk to the doctor for you do not want to mess up your childs system.  I always air on the side of caughtionthanks for all your  input however I did discuss the melatonin with his doctor shes the one who said it was ok..i just didny know  if  anyone else was having  sucses with  it  ..and  what i was saying was..he takes a nap at home with  me  on the  weekends... but goes to regular pre-school and wont take naps there even with the  lights out and its  all quite  ,,,nor will he  use the restroom at school to go # 2.... so this  is  my dilema right now  luckly hes only going to  preschool every other day right  now  ..while  im home  for the  month....have agood night  everyoneThe melatonin I give ds comes in 1mg tabs and it's labelled "adult use only."  I give ds a half a tab.  He's 13 and weighs 100 lbs.  I agree with Jillette that you should check with your doctor before you start giving it for naps.

If I understand you correctly, he's napping at home but not at preschool.  I'd say one nap a day would do fine.  My ds didn't nap at all when he was home.  At daycare he'd take a nap because the lights went off and all the other kids laid down and took one.  Then he'd be up till 11pm!  I hated naptime at daycare.

I have had a lot of success with melatonin. I would have your doctor write a note to the school saying it's ok, and the dosage. You can get chewables also. My son would not nap at preschool either.

I had the #2 problem when my son was 4 as well -- the "professionals" all had ridiculous conclusions and suggestions. It was a focus problem.

He uses the toliet now 24/7. It was an ordeal for years. He takes a Miralax prescription and eats 1/4 cup of Kellogs original bran buds daily. 20 min after eating I have him sit on the toliet for 15 minutes. Nothing else solved this problem, and I tried EVERYTHING. I even read books. I even talked to a "therapist" who insisted it was a control issue, LOL. Follow your instincts on this toliet business--mother knows best on this one.

WOW  THATS  HOW  I FEEL TOO....I AM GOING TO  GIVE  MY SON PER THE  DOCTOR ALREADY SAID  TO  GIVE IT TO  HIM DURING THE DAY

SO WHAT DID  YOU DO  FOR  YOUR SON ..OR  HIS  HE STILL NOT USING THE  TOILET FOR  # 2 DO YOU HAVE HIM IN PULL-UPS  AT  NIGHT  ?

Yes I agree with  you "no tellin"

makes since to  me!

NoTellin ~ We had the same problem with DS going #2. He just wouldn't do
it. The doctor also prescribed Miralax, which did help him not be able to
hold it in. Otherwise, he would just hold it for as long as he
could...sometimes a week without going. It was horrible. The Miralax
caused some "runny" problems when he would try holding, but in time, it
got better and now at age 6, we dont have the problem any more.

Strange thing...is this a related issue with ADHD kids?

Oh...Staced72 ~ Miralax is a prescription powder laxative that can be mixed
with juice, water, etc. It doesn't have any color or flavor to it.

I have never been able to find any evidence that the #2 issue and ADHD are related. It's just my assessment. When my son was going through that I was on the tolieting message boards. I wanted answers. I got as much advise as I could. I tried everything under the sun. I did not know my son was ADHD. When I realized that he was, and I came to this board, I found that A LOT of parents dealt with the same impossible #2 problem. The number of members dealing with it was much much higher than I saw on the tolieting boards. After I became familiar with typical ADHD behavior, one day the light just went on, this tolieting problem is related to lack of focus and distractibility! That made sense based on my observations of my son.

what does miralax do?
